It can sound pretty close to a Ray in parallel mode but also sounds good in series. The single coil mode is cool and definitely different than the normal Ray sound. I do prefer the sound of the normal Ray preamp though so I will probably be returning this bass. I think I had just become too accustomed to the 3 band SR Special preamp that it feels limiting to use the passive Ray. My go-to sound with the 3 band preamp is to cut the treble a hair and boost the bass a hair. The passive has just the tone knob which doesn't really get me where I quite like it in a mix.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the bass to anyone that is interested in it though. I've been contemplating for over a month and a half whether or not I am going to return it simply because it plays and feels so great.

thanks that’s the kind of feedback i was looking for. i don’t have a special but i set my pre special 3 band stingray similar to what you described. it would be something if the stingray sound was attainable without a battery though.

My Burnt Apple 4H SRS weighs 8.2 lbs (8 pounds 4 oz) so for me, right around 8lbs flat is the sweet spot for me. Most of the Stingrays on Sweetwater right now are 9.5-10lbs so I’m not finding it easy to find 8lb examples. You have to keep an eye out for a while or buy used from someone who accurately discloses the weight. For my next Ray, I would love to find something closer to 7 pounds 13 oz or 7.75-7.8lbs I would be worried about the sustain going any lower

I’m finding several 8 pound flat EBMM on SW at the moment
