A Thought for Late Bloomers

You know, if I fixated on why this didn't happen earlier in my life or why the right people weren't around when I did, I wouldn't have even come this far. For me, just playing and learning is the name of the game. That and possibly making a few bucks.

I started at 17 on bass, but before that it was clarinet and sax. I probably would have gave stuck with sax, but the band at school suck. Catholic boys school. Not an other of emphasis on the arts, so I joined a neighborhood band on bass. The rest in history. Now 47 years later, my best years are still ahead of me, but still having a good time.

About yr 2017-18 i got a hankering to learn bass guitar to gig along with some of the Church musicians. Vicarious experience and Memory lane factered in. I started with a cheap 5-string. The authoratative lows draw my attention. Had no amp to plug into so i bought a used PA system (cheap) to suffice for input/output also. Noise. Well, it was about 40+ yrs ago since i last had held a guitar and this one really felt foreign to me. The one i played in high school was a 4 string-short scale bass. The wider neck & extra string was messing w/my psyche. Plus factor in old age, bad vision, fingers and joints that exhibit latency when brain signal pulses. Also the PA sound really funky as to be expected. At that point i started researching sounds & equipment. Progress is often defined as how much room you have on your credit card!! :0 Once i had really cool functional equipment as desired there was no excuse to start learning. Talk about mental balking! Also eliminating excuses was when i had cateract/lens stuff done 2 yrs ago and that really helped with practicing. I see 4 strings or 5 strings now instead of 16 or 20. :0 For last two years i have been making incremental progress. Having fun. Especially since i quit hammering my cc. Well about 3 weeks ago a light bulb went off in my head and i experience "learning". To the point of realizing my goal to play with the choir peeps.I participated at Easter Services Sunday with my rig w/a saxaphone and piano/guitarist and various singers. And didn't major error! I gave myself a B or B+. :0

Oh and another progress/goal impediment was lack of electrical outlets in the choir loft. Around Christmas time another fella and I ran wire under the Church to the choir loft. Back then it was, "what do you need electricity for?" when church was built.
