We just wrapped up our annual jazz fest a few weeks ago at the U. Our last guest artist this year was legendary bassist John Clayton. In addition to being a walking icon of the bass, and a fantastic performer, he's also one of the nicest human beings I've ever met. Here's some pics from a bass master class he held as part of his residency.

I would have enjoyed being there and meeting both of you. :)

I've played with Clay a few times. Good player and nice guy. Tell him hi from me.

One of the funny things about the Clayton master class is he ended up telling my students things I've been telling them for years, and suddenly they see the light. John and I had a good laugh about that over a meal later, and of course I thanked him for the backup.

Here's sample from John's performance with the big band, starting with a solo bass intro then melding into his arrangement, which is fantastic. The students felt uplifted everywhere they came into contact with him.

Great performance from John- model study in German bowing and sound production. Pianist played very nicely, with a nice touch. Great arrangement. Only one young lady? Unfortunate.
Thanks for sharing this Chris! 👍👍

Slightly off topic;
Chris- are your students familiar with this old album? You could assign it as homework. 🙂
First tune on the album:

A couple of years ago I was at the Jazz Festival here in Montreal talking to some people in the waiting area outside the concert hall where Herbie Hancock's opening band was in the process of playing. There were only a few other people around, namely a group of three sitting about twenty feet away. One of the people in my group said, "That's Diana Krall over there", nodding towards the seated group of three. I looked over and immediately recognized one of the people she was sitting with: John Clayton. I wondered for approximately ten minutes whether I should just leave them alone, but I figured, no, I had to say something. So I walked over, waited a minute and then said, "I'm sorry to interrupt…" - and at this point I could see that Diana Krall was preparing for yet another fan's declaration of love, so she was probably a bit surprised when I instead addressed John - "…but I just wanted to say how much I've gotten out of your online lessons". You'd think I'd just made John's day. He stood up, shook my hand enthusiastically and introduced me to the others. Beaming, he then asked about my bass playing and whether I was playing at the festival. He was so warm and personable, it was as if I'd run into an old friend. John was an absolute gentleman and I'll never forget that encounter.

@bass player 53 I honestly have no idea whether the students would be familiar with that album, but I'd be happy to share it with them. Kids' listening habits these days are so different than our generation. We had specific recordings, and they have an endless stream. As the saying goes, we "listened a lot to a little", while they "listen a little to a lot".

Regarding the young ladies, we do have several more in the program, but they aren't in that band. It's a sad fact of jazz in general, but we do the best we can to be supportive.

@bass12 That sounds exactly like the John Clayton we experienced a few weeks ago. 🙂
