...a young Oteil Burbridge - Va. Beach Top 40 Band

...a friend recently informed me that some videos of his -80s band, the Squares (w/ Oteil) was posted on youtube,
Oteil is maybe 19, playing a Fender Jazz with a Peavey 1x18 + 2x10 cab with a G-K 800RB head. He sounds great.

The Hotcakes audio from the mid-'70s is also happening. Benny Bialy on bass.
Lotta AWB, EW&F, The Crusaders, Tom Scott & The L.A. Express, & other R&B Pop tunes of the day.

Wow, great performance and great playing (by everybody)! I can't say I am a fan of the bass sound. It sounds too Jaco and could have filled out nicer with both pickups on. But really, everything is spot on. It sounds like listening to a studio record from that era.

Interesting how he has the cab off the floor and sideways. That thing weighs a ton. They had that exact setup at a jam night I regularly frequented about 10 years ago (GK 800RB/Peavey single cab 1x18+2x10).

I am opposite. I love this setup and tone . The bass drum is already providing the woof and thump. Would be muddy with both pickups on. I know he eventually becomes a soloist but his lines here is the glue to this song. Even if he has a P he would probably EQ it similarly.

Trippy he has that Peavey 1810 or 1820 on a stand 😊

And now, with his Dead tribute band, and the Dire Wolf....

And The Dire Wolf #2 (hanging), and the Wolf guitars.

Did they ever get any substantial recordings out, or were they just a hot regional party band? Definitely a slice of the times. I have no problem with his sound, it fits.

I’m fine with this just morphing into another oteil appreciation thread. He’s smoking it in this video.

I used to be down in ‘bama and watch him play all the time. He’s as good as anybody, and he has is own style. Hittin’ the Note with ABB is an unbelievable bass record.

Was Benny with Hotcakes? Hotcakes currently has a pretty good bass player name Bobby (can't think of his last name) Benny was with Off The Record for a minute then took my spot in Rare Mixx after my 'dismissal' from the band.
