Dude, as a fan of power metal...Dragonforce being 'ridiculous' and making silly music is essentially making a mockery of a genre I love. Hence my hatred for them. It would be like a black metal band with pink corpse paint singing about satan's cat and how the dumps it takes are the most evil satanic thing ever, especially if the dog eats them. While its all in good humour for some, people who actually dig the genre thats being made fun of may take offense.

As it stands, Dragonforce is #7 on my "Bludgeon to Death With Their Own Instruments" list.

I'm a big fan of power metal too. And I can't stand it when I tell someone I'm into it, and I get;

That always turns into an awkward conversation if I voice my desire to "live in a future world" where there is no DragonForce. Of course the reference is lost on them.

I'm kinda neutral on DragonForce. I don't like them but I don't really dislike them either. I say give them a few albums to realize what they can do with all that guitar talent, and we may be looking at a completely different band. I'm keeping them in my prospects list.

I like DragonForce. I find it hard to take any power metal seriously and most of the bands that play it don't. I mean who really takes songs about fighting dragons and wearing armor and going off to battle all that seriously? D&D geeks? I love metal, but it's not like I listen to a lot of it for current events or socio-political commentary.

Come on man. Even Maiden doesn't take themselves that seriously.

That would be pretty great. Pointing out the irony in your own genre has been rampant in punk songs for a long time. Why not metal?

AFAIK, Strapping Young Lad is one of the few bands who does point out the irony of metal, occasionally. The music is still brutal and true to death metal form, which is not something I can say about DragonForce (IMO of course). I recall seeing an interview where they are talking to Mark Morton from Lamb of God in regards to Killswitch Engage and their use of melody. He said something along the lines of "If our band did it, all of our fans would ****ing hate us". It's unfortunate, but metal in general can be pretty limiting to new things. In order to do well you have to conform to the stereotypes of the genre to an extent.

There is a new rule in place which JT commented on in one thread or another that basically says if you receive 8 infractions you are permanently banned. It may be that he already had 8 infractions in which case, 1 more infraction, however minor, means you are permanently off the books.

Having grown up reading fantasy novels, listening to some power metal reminds me of growing up and I have fond memories of it. To me, power metal is like a fantasy novel in musical form.

I think that's a good way of seeing it, like a soundtrack to go along with the book. I also grew up with fantasy novels and like novels different bands have better takes on what they're presenting. As far as DragonForce, I think their lyrics and music are still fairly good in keeping with that mold, however their stage antics and overall attitude is what turns a lot of people off.

As a sidenote I didn't mean the D&D geek thing to be offensive to anyone as I've played pencil and paper rpgs and enjoy them. I'm pretty sure the members of DragonForce have as well since they're pretty much video game geeks who happen to play really fast. I still think that the subject matter in a lot of power metal is incredibly cheesy, but I LIKE that cheese. Songs about knights and stuff is ridiculously bombastic and cool at the same time. But if someone thought it was lame, then I wouldn't blame them.

DragonForce is going to be playing at Mayhem fest this year with Slipknot and Disturbed. I'm definitely going just for the sheer fact I can say that ive seen those 3 bands live.

Suicide Silence is playing too which made me unable to resist.

i can appreciate it.

i would never audition for a band like that tho.

i prefer blusey funk rock progressions as opposed to that style of metal.

i gave up on trying to learn all the advanced licks and chops and theory based stuff when i heard Steve Vai back in '92.... knowing full well that i'd never get to Berkley and /or study with Frank Zappa to get that much understanding of the fretboard.

i appreciate those that dedicate their time to playing fast fast fast, but i want to play funk funk funk... lol
