It's a problem of terminology. Whether a supply puts out AC or DC, it is always called an "AC adapter". So yes you need an AC adapter, but specifically you need one that puts out DC, not AC.
The reason both are called AC adapters is because they take the AC voltage from the wall socket, and adapt it to the amount and type of voltage needed.
As Bongo said, it gets confusing because things are referred to as "AC adapters" even when they output DC. The Proton takes 9 - 18 volts DC, with a center-negative plug. Read the label on the adapter and make sure it says something like "OUTPUT: 9v DC".
