Accugroove users - how are you using your cabs ?

New gear is always fun :hyper:

I am a new Accugroove owner, picked up a Tri115 from a fellow TBer to use with my Mesa amps ... Walkabout and MPulse600 (in a Venture 2x12).

So far, I am really digging the full sonic range of this cab with both amps. The combinations I have tried:

Walkabout amp & Tri115
Sounds great, better broad range than the Scout 15 I have on hand to use with the WA 12 ... really gets the updated, articulate but old-school tone I am shooting for. However, at 8ohms, it only drags 165w out of the Walkabout, so it may be a bit underpowered for 50% of my gigs. Still very nice.

Walkabout 12 combo & Tri115
Now the Walkabout is running at 2.67ohms and the 300w+ headroom tells for sure. The Tri115 and the Walkabout 12 really match up nicely. Also really starting to hear the EQ power of the amp into the Accugroove ... it's very sensitive to a wide range of small EQ changes. VERY nice !

MPulse600 & Tri115
Yowzers! .. I have had a love/less love (not hate really) relationship with the 600 in my Venture 2x12 rig. The MPulse really drives the Tri115 at a nice level. I'd heard that the Accugroove cabs wanted some juice in order to really romp, this seems to confirm that to me.
Great tone across the tone spectrum I'm seeking deep low end to upper mids (say 2-3k) .. I tend to cut tweets and the super top end. I may pull the MPulse head and use this combination on a lot more gigs this summer.

Venture 2x12 & Tri115
Had to do it .. and man, what a sound ... biiiig kick in the low end, and low mids with wonderful mid articulation.... without ever getting clanky or hissy on the top. Just sweet as can be! The Tri115 seems to have tamed the "Mesa mid-grind" that I really don't like about the 2x12 in the Venture rig. Too bad I'll rarely, if ever, take this combined rig out. Just no need for such a monster on amy gig I do these days.

Now that I've had the Tri115 for a week, I need to start sorting out how to practically use this new member of the gear family.

anyway, please let me know how you are driving your Accugrooves, and what kind of cab combinations you are using.

So, no Accugroove users out there want to share info about their set-up ?

I really am interested in hearing this because I am thinking about revamping my amp choices in order to use the Tri115 more effectively.

I love the Walkabout, and will continue to use it, but at 8ohms it only delivers ~165w, so I'm not sure it will be a good fit for the Tri115 in a single cab arrangement. A bit underpowered and on the large side for many of my gigs. That leads me to think that I will most likely change out my Venture combo for something else to drive the Tri115 to its real potential.

I do like the MPulse600 driving the Tri115, and I suppose I can pull the head from the Venture combo and retire the remaining PH 2x12 (with the resulting dead head), but I am also interested in what amps others are using to drive their Accugroove cabs ... the Tri115 in particular.

so, c'mon KJUNG, I know from other postings that you use (or at least have used) a Tri112 + Tri115 stack. What did you drive it with ?

anyone else ?

As it turns out, I JUST got done trying out my Walkabout head thru my Accugroove Tri210L. KILLER sound. Also, this cab can have quite the extensive lowend that sometimes overwhelms everything, but with the surgical precision of the Walkabout, I was able to cut at 30hz while boosting back in some bass and low mids with the rest of the EQ. PERFECT with my Sadowsky PJ5!

heh! .. I read a post that KJung uses (or used) that set-up. I'm sure it would sound good, I really like mixing 12's and 15s ( I currently stack my Walkabout 12 with a Scout 15 for the occasional larger/louder gig) But that's probably a bit over the top for most of my needs.

I"m curious if any of you guys who've tried the Tri112L/Tri 115L setup have directly compared it to the ElWhappo.

Also, and on a side note, I"m looking to move my Epi UL410 to make room for a Whappo Jr. This way, I'll have the Walkabout/Tri210L rig for small/medium gigs, the DB750/Whappo Jr. for big shows, and of course the DB750 with the Tri210L and the Whappo Jr for those 'let's put cracks in marble' moments.

You know, this is why I went with the Tri115 as opposed to either the Tri112 or the Tri210. I found the 12 to be just a bit less beefy than I prefer, and to my surprise, I found the 210 to be too bassy for my tastes. That surprised me very much.
EQ capabilities notwithstanding, I decided the Tri115 suited my needs better, and boy, this cab just covers the sonic spectrum really well.

well, I'm really digging the one I picked up. My biggest issue is balancing out the gear I have with the Tri115 for the best fit for my gigging situation. It's one thing to have a piece of gear, it's another to get a good sounding, realistically portable set-up built around it.

Key thing for me is that these Accugroove cabs do seem to want power to really get to their sweet spot, and in the case of the Tri115 (and the Tri112), it's an 8ohm cab, and my two current amp choices, Walkabout and MPulse600 deliver full power at 4ohms (although the 600 does put out plenty of power for my needs at 8ohms).

So, I am in the middle of working all this out, but as I said before, the Tri115 sure sounds good. It really gets that updated old-school tone that I seek. Great full, yet still tight low end, but not boomy/muddy (reacts to the Mesa EQ very well), Wonderful across the whole mids section (low mids to upper mids) . this must be the dedicated mid driver at work (this is a first for me), and the 2 soft dome tweets (instead of the usual foster type horns) deliver very discrete highs without any of the hissy/sizzly nastiness that I typically associate with tweets. Just very playable sound with either of the Mesa's and my Fenders.

Cool. Another thing I keep in mind with the Accugroove cabs is that they seem to be tuned differently than most bass cabs. IME they go WAY lower than most comparable designs, and the mids and highs are natural and smooth whereas some other cabs have more peaks and/or scoops in those regions. Because of this, the Accugroove stuff takes to EQ'ing really well, and IME I end up doing a lot of that to dial in different tones and fit different stage environments. With my bottom-heavy PJ5 and the Walkabout, I cut a lot of sub frequencies (30hz), and then add back in Low mids on the Walkabout (around 150-200hz) and bass on my Sadowsky. The Tri210L sounds radically different when I EQ it like this.

Even though my same setup thru the Epi UL410 was a little easier to dial in (basically ran the amp flat with a touch of low mids), when EQ'd properly I like the Tri210L MUCH better!

i'm using a carvin b1500 into 2 stacked tri112Ls

i've also found it to be the case that the speakers sound best with some power behind them, and that's why i moved to the carvin from a thunderfunk 420

i'd like to try the 115 under one of my 12s to hear how that compares though--i pondered going that route when i bought them, but opted against it and occasionally wonder if i should have gone with one 15 and one 12

man!, so you are getting in the neighborhood of 1200w at 4ohms (2x8ohm Tri112's) .. that's a lotta juice, way more than I ever need. Of course, it only does 750w at 8ohms ... :D

I have no experience with Carvin gear. I have read some nice reviews about their stuff here. Decent price too ... at $650 direct. Its all SS though right ? ... no tubes in the preamp section at all I don't think.

yeah, it is a lot of power, but i keep it in check--the reserve mainly seems to help with transients and puts a 'wallop' to the sound that i just couldn't get with the TF

i really really dig this amp with these cabs--it's a very flat, neutral sounding amp, all SS as you mentioned, and at about 30 lbs, is still very easy to move around...i too read some well-thought reviews from a few users here, and the bass gear magazine review was what really sold me on it

i imagine it would match with a tri115 very well, you'd of course have power to spare, and you wouldn't have the more midrange voicing of the tri112 to contend with in terms of eq, could be a really even, smooth rig...

i haven't tried the 115. i run an svt into a whappo jr for med/large gigs.
absolutely killer! the more you turn it up, the better it sounds, of course
the room must be rather large to get away with it...

cool, so a tube SVT into the W. Jr. ? That's good to hear. I am very much in the tube, or at least the very tube influenced hybrid camp (the Mesa MPulse hybrids in particular). I want it clean, but I do like that tube compression and sweetness/fatness. :cool:

This may sound like an odd combo, but I tried it and it works pretty well. The Tech21 VT Bass pedal into a LMII and then into the Tri115. Adds a good snarl to the LMII and gives you a bit more juice than the Walkabout.
