Acoustic 260 Micro. My review

i have 1 more question i think i know the answer but ive heard diff so gonna ask can i run a cab thats rated at 400watts at 4ohms with a 100 watt head i kno u wont get all u can from the subs but it wont hurt anything rite, the only time u hurt something is when the head is to big watts wise for the speakers then u will blow the speaker rite.thanks
 
so when looking for a new cab stick to 4ohm, why does it work with 2 8 ohm cabs then does it cut them to 4 ohm when doubled up is there any good sites for learning about amps and how they work thanks for helping me.

Because it works in a divide by 2 equation. When you put 2 - 8 ohm cabs in parallel you divide by 2 and get a 4 ohm impedance.

A 100W head will work fine into a 400W rated cabinet. Your at 25% of the rated power at that point and quite within the saftey region. The manufacturer is saying the voicecoil will take 400W of power (or heat) before the voicecoil starts to deteriorate. At 100W your are far below that limit.

It's a lot more complicated than dividing by two, though. Just so happens that when you connect two 8 ohm cabs up in parallel that you get 4 ohms. But if you try to hook up an 8 and 4 ohm cab in parallel, you get 2.67 ohms, so you can't divide by two. It's some formula that I never bothered to remember, so I just take the word of someone who knows what they're doing when it comes to impedance ;)

But only if you are not driving it into clipping!
 
what does divideing into clipping mean and what is clipping i just dont want to ruin my head or the cab i purchase thank you guys for all your help im learning everytime i read this thread,have any of you guys used the 260 mk2 head with diff cabs if so what cabs have you used thanks again this is one of the best forums ive ever been on:)

The dividing by 2 only works when paralleling two speakers with the same impedance. Otherwise the formula is the product of the two speakers divided by their sum: R1*R2/R1+R2

For two 8 ohm speakers: 8*8/8+8 or 64/16 which equals 4.

This is also the same as 8/2 (=4).

Paralleling and 8 and a 4 results in 8*4/8+4 or 32/12 which equals 2.67 like Jimmy said.

In practice this is only a close but useful approximation, as impedance is not constant with frequency.

A further complication is how the power is distributed between the two speakers. With two (more or less identical) 8 ohm speakers the power divides equally: each speakers receives the same amount of power - half the power delivered by the amp. With paralleled 8 and 4 ohm speakers the power divides unequally, with twice the power going to the 4 ohm cab, so 2/3 of the power goes to the 4 ohm cab and 1/3 goes to the 8 ohm cab. If the 8 ohm cab. is the better cab (more efficient or better tone), you could be putting most of the power into the less good cab!
 
So what ohms is the cab that comes with the 260 Mini Head? The Specs say the head is rated for 100 watts.

The Ampeg is 200 watts and the Ampeg cab is 8 ohms allowing for the use of two cabs running 4 ohms at 200 watts which would probably kill the Acoustic. Yes it's more money but it's more amp as well.

The Acoustic appears to be half as much amp for half as much money. I can see how the Ampeg would be close to the same volume as the Acoustic when both amps are running 100 watts, it's when you drop the ohm load on the Ampeg that it would then become apparent the difference between the two amps. It's not going to be twice as loud with twice the power but twice the power and drivers would be a fairly audible difference.


I'm sure they both are fine and do what they were meant to. I have tried neither.
 
the 260 is 4ohms thats y im haveing trouble finding a cab all i find is 8ohm or 4ohm at 400+ watts just looking for a 2-12 2-10 or1-15 4ohm rated at like 200ish watts t
like i said bfore the head is just to much for factory cab distorts at half way up on stack and 3/4 up on active bass with the -10 button in wich is quieter of 2 options if that makes sence
 
OK the 260 head has a 4 ohm minimum rating. There is no question about that.

What Ohm is the 1x10 260 cab rated at?

I have not been convinced from what I have seen so far it's 4 ohms. Can someone take a measurement? Is there a tag on the speaker cab?

Bassplayer there are lots of 4 ohm 2x12 cabs out there, a few 4 ohm 2x10 cabs, and not so many 4 ohm 1x15's. Look in the clasifieds for a used 4 OHM Eden 2x10.

On the wattage I would not want a 4 ohmcab rated at 200 watts. That is asking for troubkle down the road when you decide you actually need some power. Not even sure there is such a thing but I wouldnt want to find it if there is.
 
im about over this thing with factory cab if ur past half to just over half on head and 3/4 or above on bass it distorts whats the point of haveing a 100 watt amp that i cant get any louder than a 30watt practice amp good thing for 30 day money back i guess i dont want to take it back but ggrrr iratated
 
This thread seems to be involved with Ampeg
and Acoustic, but the title just says Acoustic.

Well, I got my own Fender version of small
amp and speaker.

In my opinion, it has better voicing than the
Ampeg or the Acoustic, plus it's 175 watts
at 8 ohm and 350 at 4 ohms. Not being
tied to those shitdy speakers in the 350
combo, this setup is far superior to the
Acoustic or Ampeg.

I got the head on clearance at GC for $250
and the speaker was $75 on CL.

This head is a real sleeper. Thanks to Fender
not putting a speaker out on the 350 Rumble
Combo, nobody knows how good the amp
really sounds with decent speakers.
