Last night at band practice I dialed in a what we thought was a good bass tone with the b600h and 410. However, I still felt like I needed more CLEAN headroom. In this band we always use drop tuning and I need a very solid bottom end. I feel like I also need better note definition than this rig is currently giving.

This is why I'm trying to figure out what my best option is: more speakers (another b410), better speakers, or a higher quality 4ohm 410 such as the avitar.

Adding a second 8 Ohm b410 will net you around 6 dB of volume. I think what you are actually running into isnt lack of head room from your amp, but reaching the mechanical limits of your cab due to the amount of lows you have dialed in. In that case adding a second cab will net you more volume, but it still may not be what you are looking for.

Your head is decent, I have one in a similar vein (mark VIII). I might look into a different cab if I were you, but it wouldnt necessarily be an Avatar to begin with.

The only cab I would consider from Avatar is the TB 153. I would get one in 8 Ohm LF flavor, then a second with a reverse baffle. This will let you change out heads in the future if you want, and will have way more low end extension than a 410.

If you're gonna go one way or another anyway - buying from GC or MF has that big neat return for full credit if you want to try another B-410 cab.

BUT adding another B-410 makes sense; more drivers equal more air in motion and bass needs to move air.

I cannot truthfully say that I've ever pegged my amps/cabs and have always had lots of capacity beyond what I've asked them to do.

Headroom to me is having something more under the hood. Running at 30-50% of amp capacity would make sense to me as having more to go for those 'times' when you want to move a building or give everyone cataracts.

When you push gear to 70-80% or so, you get into the area where things start to distort and I too like to stay out of that arena.

At times that I really REALLY need more volume, I put my B-810 behind, backward to the twin 410s. That takes the B-600 to 2Ω and full Wattage.

Just a note::: The B-410s have taken a price hike lately, but what hasn't? You might be able to take your B-600H and a B-410 cab to your local GC/MF and test another B-410 under/over it all and see for yourself.

Problem solved: I bought a used ampeg pr410hlf. Now I'll use the acoustic 410 at home for practice and rehearse and perform with the Ampeg.
