Acoustic Bass Recommendations, under $999...

I'm thinking about getting another acoustic bass guitar. Without having played one, I'd really love to have the Martin BCPA4, but simply can't afford the $2K pricetag. I've been looking around on the internet at the various makes and models in the under $8-$900 price range, and I keep gravitating back to either the D'Angelico SB-700 or the Guild B-140E as possible contenders.

Sadly, there aren't any dealers in my area that carry either of these (at least not "in stock"), so I'm looking to do a little more research on my own before I make a lengthy trip to check one out in person.

Anyone have any insights into these 2 great "looking" basses? Or a recommendation on another one?

I recommend Breedlove Pursuit or Solo Jumbo models, or a Boulder Creek ABG. I've played both and they are great instruments.
I can't help thinking that the D'Agelico headstock looks out of proportion and would create neck dive. Could be an optical illusion. No experience with that Guild model.

These would probably be my choices as well, but the Breedlove would win out. String through bridge and a naked fretless board puts it over the top.

I purchased my Fender Kingman used, with case, for just over $400.
Its Jazz Bass neck and Fishman preamp work well very for what I need out of an ABG, and with fresh strings & a bit of carefully applied EQ, it holds its own against any amplified ABG I've tried.

I have a Boulder Creek and it does about as well as any available new <$1K ABG. If you could find a used Tacoma Thunderchief, though, check them out too.
