Active Bass or Ampeg Rig????

I am wanting to get some information before i make a purchase.

basically at the moment I play through an Ashdown MAG300 head with MAG matching bass cab (its a fairly standard rig to say the least) but it does do the job.

I have a fender passive jazz bass, which is dull and quiet sounding compared to an active bass.

I am wanting to completely upgrade, as my band are taking things more seriously.
I play in a metal melodic rock and roll band, so im looking for a bright clear sound from my rig

At the moment I only have £500 to buy some new gear with

I can either buy a Fender active p-bass

or buy either an Ampeg head or cab(the cheapest model B2RE)

I also have just bought a Sansamp bass driver, which im told sound just as good as an Ampeg??

What do you think would be a better buy, an active bass with the sansamp, or an Ampeg head or cab?

I'm thinking that if im going to buy an Ampeg id rather hold out for the professional series

Any feedback would be great.. Thanks!
