Active pups?

My main basses both have 18v active pups and I have gotten used to them and I can make them both sound awesome. I got a really sweet playing passive bass for Xmas but the the pups are just lame compared to my 18v.
The problem is The others are matsumoku soapbars with who knows what for a preamp and my new bass is routed for pj. Any suggestions/ opinions re active pj pups?

You can just add a preamp with your existing pickups.

This topic may be better handled in the Pickups/Electronics forum... but I'll throw my $0.02...

Get better pickups. Passive ones, with higher output (Dimarzio or Duncan are easy, Nordstrand if you have the extra dough). If that gets you closer, but not there, add a preamp.
