Adam Clayton Does Not Suck.

I'd wear a pair of "Air Rambis'" kicks in a heartbeat. I still rock his signature-look specs on the court. In the interest of building a great team that is a the total package, give me hard working, smart in the situation Kurt Rambis over a Blake Griffin or whatever flash any day. Speaking of old men and basketball, Paul Pierce WENT OFF on those youngsters last night. Ok, back to practicing...

Can anyone point out a band that still has the original lineup after 35 years and is still selling out stadiums? U2 and Rush; anyone else? Still making hits?

Whatever anyone says, you can never slot them as bubble gum, commercial, etc. They are not mainstream either, they created their own stream that has so many fans of so many age groups that they own wherever they play, whatever they touch. It's because their formula ( I don't think there is a conscious one in U2) touches peoples emotions. I am a fan and don't get why people miss the raw emotion that comes through in the music. But that's what makes the world go around.

Look at film of AC and you'll see when he's bashing away at two notes, he means it and his face and body language shows it, he's living every simple pluck of the string. How many of us can play with that conviction?

These discussions on whether Adam Clayton is good or not remind me of a review I once read for Sting's Soul Cages (if I recall it was in BP Magazine but I'm to lazy to go thru my back issues to be sure). Anyway I believe the reviewer was referring to "All This Time" and stated the song would have been better if Sting had played more fills...
..:eyebrow:...........:scowl:.....
... yeah sure, if he had played more fills maybe that song would have been successful.....:rollno:

Don't you love people like that..or hate them :scowl: Really it's like the critic who blasts a movie that becomes a boxoffice smash hit.The food critic who say's the chef sucks but you can't get a table at his restaurant for weeks on and on. You would think on a website devoted to bass players and all thing bass playing that we would support our bass playing brothers and sisters. That we would not tear them down for their success or because some feel they are root note riders hiding begind a simple melody line all night...really? Where do you come off judging them? Where are your millions of records sold, world wide fame and fortune show us...please  Critics ...blah!

Also he is one of my favorite bass players because of the lines he comes up with. The lines he plays in my mind are the hardest only because for me anyway I want to play more and not less. Remember everyone Less is more especially when talking about bass lines!

Most of the people coming to Adam's defense are changing the argument from one that is subjective (does he suck), to one that they can win (has he made lots of money). No one can claim that Adam is not a commercial success. But that has nothing to do with his playing ability. If record sales = talent then Ringo Star is the best drummer in the world, because the Beatles (according to wiki anyway) have sold the most records of any band.

As for the argument that we shouldn't criticize other bass players - why not? Are we only allowed to voice our opinions if we are super talented and super successful?? Do we have to play as well as Victor to have an opinion on his playing?

I don't think that 99% of the criticism has been harsh at all. I don't hear anyone saying he sucks, just that he's an average player. If we're going to discuss the merits of his playing, let's keep it about his playing, not his bank account. I'd love to be as rich as him, but I don't want to play like him (not that there is anything wrong with his playing, just not my cup of tea).

The thread is titled AC Doesn't Suck, not: AC is the Best Bassist Ever. The defenders are supporting that proposition. The point of earnings is valid.

If he sucked, his band likely wouldn't be on top and he wouldn't be a millionaire. He is getting the job done with expression, augmentation of theme, musical interest, drives the music with enough interest to touch multitudes and get their hips swinging and with consistency his playing serves the music perfectly. Therefore he does not suck. Therefore his bad is on top. Mediocrity or level of ability is another argument. But his innate ability to do what he does, no more no less, has made him wealthy.

This may be one the most ridiculous posts ever. I feel sorry for you that you can't separate artistic success from financial success. The stupidest thing about your response is that I never said anything bad about AC or his playing.

WOW! Really what did I win? Yes! Artistic success at his level is to be financialy rewarded or why put in 30 years of work on the road etc. If you want to feel sorry for me it should be that the older I get I'm having trouble keeping the pounds off... you know what I mean? Oh... you said nothing bad about AC granted but you supported, supporting a TB bashing thread on a bassist you know you wish you were and all the others who bashed him here will never be. And to think I don't even like U2 :p
