Adding 5 string bass to my arsenal!

I have 5 4-string basses and was thinking of adding a 5 string to my collection. I was looking through eBay and I saw a Dean Edge 5 string bass. I would like to know if any of you have ever played/owned this bass and your thoughts/opinions on same. I won this auction ($158.00). I am not too familiar with Dean and I do have 30 days in which to return this bass. I know that ultimately the decision is mine and I will post my own opinions once it arrives but I am thinking that I may have pulled the trigger too soon?

Thanks.

I own two Deans, neither of which is an Edge, but have played an Edge 5.

I think the Edge 5 — particularly at that price point — is a good low-cost experiment to see if you like playing a 5-string instrument. One thing that may or may not matter to you: The current generation of Edge basses are all 35" scale. If your current herd is all 34" scale, this can take some getting used to.

I just did a brief search on eBay for 5 string stingrays and they may be a lot of bass for the money, but they also tend to cost a lot. Or do you know of a place where I can get a used stingray dirt cheap?

Agreed. Getting a 'ray cheap is talked about a LOT on here, but they are few & far between.

I'm currently in the market for one and the cheapest I've seen was $1100.

You could look at the Sterling by Music Man SUB Ray5, or if you have a bit more to spend the Sterling by Music Man Ray35.
Both solid basses for the money and will get you VERY close to a US-made Music Man Stingray/Sterling 5.

I agree with you on the low-cost experiment. However, I would not want to start out on a "crappy" bass. I have read some previous posts with regards to Dean basses in general and a lot of them are positive. I would like to know if I am wasting my time and money on this particular bass...as far as 34 to 35 inch scale, I am sure that should be able to adjust (i used own a 35 - 4 string). I just need a decent sounding 5 string that will not kill the wallet and still sound good.

Music Man SUB Ray5 would be more my speed for now. Saw them on eBay for $300.00. If I can hold off with the Dean until later this year then the Ray35 is what I would be waiting for. I like the low b thump.

You'll only know about the Dean after you've tried it.
Diff basses from same mnf'r may be diff-
and it's all 'how you like it', not what anyone else thinks:
give it a try.
BTW- Godin's are very under-rated for quality US/Canadian built basses.
Haven't played a Freeway, but my BG5 isn't going anywhere.
Let us know what 'You' think about the Dean, after you've given it a fair try...

It's already on her way so I may as well crack the box and take a peek...who knows, it may be love at first sight, second. Will keep you posted.
