Adding 8" to 115 cab

I've got an older peavey cab with a Carvin speaker in it, sounds great. But there is no high end, and not enough mids for me. I measured it out, and I can fit an 8" in. I would like to use this as a stand alone. The speaker is a 4 ohm so I am assuming that I would need a 4 ohm speaker. Then I would have to run it at 8 ohms right? And how would I wire it? Maybe while I am at it I'll add a tweeter (with a switch :scowl:). Can anyone suggest a few good 8" speakers out...?

These guys have plenty of selection for 8" speakers. Carvin also has one that's good and it's pretty cheap, too.

In general, get an 8 ohm speaker and wire it in parallel with the main speaker (I assume it's a 15") Don't worry about the combined impedance because you will be using a crossover on the 8" speaker to filter out the lows and you should set the crossover point fairly high (maybe 1200 Hz) and let the big speaker do most of the work. Let the smaller speaker only handle the mids and upper mids. Forget the tweeter - it's useless for bass as long as you have the smaller speaker handling the mids and upper mids. It would just make your cabinet sound hissy.

In fact, you'll probably be better off using a 6" speaker and there are several threads that detail doing exactly this. "fEarful" is one example. http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=508659
