adding a conventional pickup to a variax bass

wondering if anyone has successfully fitted a pickup to their Variax bass - i have a 700 which i love but till last night had never used on a gig because of fears of its electronics letting me down. I had a great time with it last night and would like to make it my road bass - but to avoid having to carry a backup instrument wonder if its possible to mount a pickup (maybe an emgactive?) with its own pots and jack- socket??? I have found discussions about the possibility of something like this this on the net but I couldn't see anything to say that anyone had actually done it- glad to know of any success stories, tips, pitfalls etc

thanks people lf 33 I used a variax acoustic live for some years and hit problems with the electronics - so not just based on irrational fears. Line6man impressive looking job - did you hit any snags or was it straightforward to do?
