The heat from sanding is best to wait until the next day but flush trim sawing can happen after a couple hours (at 70°ish).

As far as an update on my headstock fix goes, the plugs appear to have set very nicely. I'll be doing a lot of the cutting and sanding tonight (I hope, unless my wife has other plans for me...) - and I fully expect that the headstock will be in fine shape for me to re-drill my tuning machine holes - AFTER measuring 8 or 9 times - and then double checking.

To the OP - I certainly didn't mean to hijack your thread. To add more info to your question about adding wood to the headstock - I've done that a number of times with great success. The key is a nice joint (very clean, straight - nicely mated pieces), glue and clamping.

Here's one where my headstock 'paddles' were originally glued too far from the nut.

So I cut 'em off...

...and glued them back on in the right spot...

...and it worked out just fine!
