After playing bass for a few years in rock bands, I have come up with some simple advice for those interested in a basic bass amp setup for a rock band. First of all, you need to have enough volume to match the drummer, either without a PA or for stage volume. If your drummer drums like a rock drummer, I think the basic requirement is at least 300 watts for the amp. For the cabinet(s), you need at least 4x10 (or 2 x 2x10), or a 12" or a 15" matched with another 12", 15" or 2x10. I know some people advocate for matching two of the same cabinets, but I have done fine with a 15/12 and a 2x10/12 setup. A single 15" cabinet is the borderline. With a drummer who hits hard, I have found it not quite enough.
For the amp, use any Ampeg. For the bass, use any Precision bass. I personally think tubes are overrated for bass. I say this with great reverence for the SVT, the greatest bass amp ever.
Do this, and you can successfully rock.
