IMO, the key is to intersperse everything you say with a comical amount of obligatory disclaimers. YMMV of course.

I started bass in 1972 and there was very little information about anything involving bass. Not as many different makes and models, as there are now. Some magazine articles. Mostly I just went to bars and tried to pick the brain of the bass player and with luck could get a lesson or two.
Now, after 40 years of all kinds of experiments and equipment purchases I have a handle on the things I wish I knew in '72. So, from time to time I'll share it.
My hands aren't the same size as others, my musical tastes and experiences are different, I may have a different point of view in terms of bass tone, strings, amp, volume, fellow musicians, and the future of music. But I'll share what I know in the most polite terms I can muster... and everyone can ignore me or not.

BassChuck, it sounds like you and I were doing the same thing at the same time...in 1972 and on. Back then, it seemed FEW knew (or cared) anything about electric bass. We didn't have bass centric magazines or specialty shops. And certainly no online courses, info or products, as "online" was still a good 20 or so years away. For a solid, playable instrument I had access to two choices...Fender or Gibson (and maybe Ric or Alembic if I'd had the resources). It is soo much better now! When I learned about TalkBass I couldn't believe it, "Really, a website just for bass players?". TB is a cool special interest thing for me and I find value in the sharing. With that said, the OP has a solid point. When I'm on the computer I'm not usually playing.

Judging by some responses, you'd think the OP said "no one should post on forums or ask about a bass that is unavailable to them to demo."
But, no such thing was said. The point is less talk, more bass. Which I have just failed at, and so have you.

One time I tried playing bass and posting messages on TB at the same time. I ended up injuring myself. So, never again! It's just too dangerous!

Pick and choose the threads you'd like to participate in. Good advice ones or even better ones like a 20 page thread on what is the best color pickguard for my black P bass.

I literally just had a pickguard made and installed on my black p-bass, and the correct answer is black pearl. Always black pearl. All other answers are wrong and people who disagree are bad and will go to hell unless they beg Saint Jaco for forgiveness.
