I started bass in 1972 and there was very little information about anything involving bass. Not as many different makes and models, as there are now. Some magazine articles. Mostly I just went to bars and tried to pick the brain of the bass player and with luck could get a lesson or two.
Now, after 40 years of all kinds of experiments and equipment purchases I have a handle on the things I wish I knew in '72. So, from time to time I'll share it.
My hands aren't the same size as others, my musical tastes and experiences are different, I may have a different point of view in terms of bass tone, strings, amp, volume, fellow musicians, and the future of music. But I'll share what I know in the most polite terms I can muster... and everyone can ignore me or not.

About 5 1/2 years ago, I got started in this bass thing a little late at age 58, but got up to speed in a hurry. A portion of that, I owe to Talkbass, especially when it comes to understanding and appreciating the hardware aspects of the instrument. And I love the ridiculous arguments!

This.....I live in a small town, and while I do drive to an awesome music store over an hour away, it's nice to get an idea to see what brands might be worth a try. (I've tried many basses at this store mind you, but they don't carry some). A brand that comes to mind that I've NEVER seen at any music store but gets a lot of buzz here on TB are the Sire basses. If you're lucky to live in one of the cities with an authorized dealer, that's great but for most of the country, you don't have that luxury. I don't like buying basses blindly but I'm glad I listened to the majority of people who gave their opinions and comments on Sire basses, because they're exactly what I'm looking for, had one shipped to me and I'm happy as a clam. We also get some useful opinions here, not just "it's good, buy it", we get particulars such as quality, string spacing, weight, neck width, sound files, ones that give us a better idea of the bass without actually seeing it.
