Advice on a New Bass

Let me preface this but saying I'm terrible when it comes to gear and tech stuff. I pretty much need to feel and hear something to gauge how it's going to sound, which is causing me some issues currently as I'm looking to pick up a new 5 string j-bass and there's not a whole lot I can feel or hear where I am.

My original plan was to pick up the Squire modified 5 string since nobody seems able to say anything bad about it, play it for awhile to see if the 5th string would cause me any problems, and if not either pick up a more expensive 5 string or swap out hardware on the Squire. The issue there was after talking to Fender it looks like it's going to be a while before my order comes in, so I cancelled it.

There seems to be some "missing links" at my local guitar shop when it comes to 5 string j basses as the stock jumps from the GSR 185 (Which is lower than what I want to spend) straight to the Fender Jazz (Which is right at the top end of what I want to spend).

So kind of a vague question I know (Since you can't really tell what a guitar will sound like until you play it) but I actually kind of like the GSR in terms of spacing and playability (I find it close to a regular (6 string) guitar which is what I'm used to) but sonically it's kinda dead. And I just really don't like anything about the Fender.

Anyhow onto my question: Would it be a good idea to purchase the GSR and try to "revive it" with some better pickups (I was think Joe Barden) and hardware, or is it a waste of time and money?

Again it's kind of a vague question, was just looking for input from someone with experience with this kind of thing. If it's a gamble that might pay off, I'd consider the risk, but if it's a no-go I'll rethink the situation. BTW what I'm looking to do pricewise is spend $800-1000 for a guitar that sounds $800-1000, the guitar itself is $250 so if I can sink that $550-750 into it in terms of work and get out what I put in, I'd be happy.

i woudlnt dump a bunch of money into something like that . . . and i wouldnt buy the squire or the fender if you dont like the fender.

i'd maybe take a drive (even if it is an hour or so) to a different store with more ibanez stock, or purchase something from musicians friend if they have a fantastic return policy.
