advice on Ampeg deal...

I have a deal on the table to buy a 8x10 Black Ampeg cab
and a SVT4-pro head for 1890 + tax

all the equip is new.

As far as I can tell its a great deal for a great Bass rig.

About to pull the trigger, and last minute advice?

Also to SVT4-pro owners, this rig looks complex.

Have you tried this rig out before? Is it the sound you desire? Don't expect tube growl out of the 4 PRO, you will get a warm and very clean tube sound, but not much else.

New 4 PRO runs you $1300 and 810e runs around $1000, So a little over $400 over buying it new is what you are saving. Not a bad deal, but you could do better. Honestly though, I would just grab it if you feel confident about it.

SVT-4 Pro is a piece of overpriced quiet junk. The Ampeg 8x10, also overpriced, quiet junk.

It's not a killer rig at all; it's half-assed by the standards of what you can make now.

Get yourself a Gbe750 and an LDS 115/6 that will be just as loud for 500 bucks less, and weigh about 1/3rd of that.

Or, buy an SVT-CL/2-pro and a quality cabinet.

IMHO, the SVT-4 Pro is not "crap," it just has to be used by someone who knows what they're doing. I had mine for quite a while and got TONS of volume out of it through my SVT-810E. It is a great amp: lots of EQ'ing ability, bi-ampable, powerful, rackmountable, tube pre/ss power, etc.

I do agree, though, that you SHOULD NOT BUY A NEW AMPEG PRODUCT! Save a ton a money and buy a better product (an older USA-made Ampeg). It makes a difference!

Ugh, allow me to reiterate: almost 2k for that crap is insane. Just say no.

Edit: You can get a used Ampeg 8x10 for 350-450.

The SVT-4Pro is reasonable at around 700 bucks used.

You should not pay more than around 1200 for that setup used, and not bother for 700+tax more new.

Crap?
If you put it through the right cab and set it up properly then you can get mondo volume.

I would not call the 4PRO and 810 crap.

First off, not crap. I am really glad I bought the same rig.

and it's not that complex. you just need to get a mono bridge speakon cable to really get everything out of that head. one cable is all it takes and it'll sound awesome.

Yes it has a lot of potential settings, read the manual twice, and then two more and you'll have it dialed. The mono bridged speakon will come with a new unit. If you get a used one just change the speakon end internal connection to +1 +2, select mono bridge on the back of the unit and be careful, stuff starts falling of your house if you turn it up over 5. :bassist:

Of course, thats my opinion, maybe slanted, like I said I have the same rig. If you haven't yet try one first, not only will you see it's not crap, it will help you make an informed decision.

Ok, now get something big, loud and make stuff fall off the house!!!!:D

yeah man, if you are buying used mia ampeg stuff, you are getting good quality. definitely not crap. yes, there are many ways to set up a 4 pro and it can be confusing at first. i've found the best results are just using the mono bridged cable and cranking it. i've had a ton of heads in my lifetime, and this is the best one hands down.

IMHO i'd say no go. I own an SVT-4 (American) and it's amazing. I bought mine new with an Ampeg 810 (American/Black) when I bought the head. The rig is/was amazing! I still use the 810 live, but have moved onto SVT-Classics. I only play American made Ampeg. I now own the SVT-4, SVT-CL (black) and SVT-AV CL. I also just picked up my third, yes THIRD 810 haha. I can't pass up great deals on them. I own two black and one silver (AV). I would say hang out on forums and craigslist. Used 4's all the time all day long for 750 and 810's from 500-700 in mint condition (I only buy mine in mint condition). One was 400, one was 700 (new in 04') and the AV stack I bought together for 1,000....such a steal. Look for a deal!

Good luck!
