Advice on my first pedal?

So I have an Ampeg BA108. I’ve enjoyed it for years but I’m planning to get an RB-210 now. I have never used a pedal. I like to play this amp jacked pretty much to the max. The speaker is not blown. I play with my thumb and index mostly, pretty stoner rock style but usually softly. When I “dig in” I have a feeling it’s more like the average intensity a lot of others play with as opposed to their digging in. I guess O have a soft touch. One thing I LOVE about this amp is that at max volume I can keep a clean tone with a soft touch, but if I dig in it distorts. I’m not sure if it’s the speaker being driven too hard or if it’s that amp itself that distorts. I assume the latter. This will be what I miss so I want to be able to recreate that distortion with a pedal. I don’t want every note I play to have distortion, in fact I’d prefer basically zero distortion/overdrive unless I choose to increase the force of my plucking. Transparent would be nice since again I’m after a purely clean tone and only what the overdriven sound when I pluck harder. Maybe all overdrive pedals are touch sensitive I don’t know..

What I’ve seen that looks like it may fit the bill is an 80’s or early 90’s DOD250, possibly a spaceman Saturn VI, ampeg scrambler or perhaps any number of dark glass pedals that I don’t really understand. The videos on their website just are so far from my playing style that it’s hard to know what I’d be working with personally. Any advice for a total pedal noob is most welcomed!

The Darkglass Vintage Microtubes may be your pedal. It gives you tones from across the spectrum (chronological basically) with the turn of one knob though there are four knobs total. It’s touch-sensitive and real simple to use. And if you ever want to take a deeper dive into modern metal tones, Darkglass is there for you.

A touch sensitive OD seems what you're looking for.
I've tried many, and the first I'd recommend for your application is the Fairfield Barbershop.
It's transparent, it's barely there and when you dig in, your bass gets that nice growl.
Fairfield even came out with a switch-less mini version for those that run it as an always on pedal.

The most transparent od I own is the bass soul food. With a light touch, you could probably get by with using a compressor as a clean boost to drive your amp. There are even some comps that have a grit/distortion blend, like the pigtronix philosophers tone.
If distortion be your thing I'd recommend a sansamp, for you specifically probably the VT bass di.

I'm a big fan of the JPTR FX Jive for this. With all switches off, it responds beautifully and gives a rich tone. The three switches all add more, to play with when desired. There are a couple in the classifieds for reasonable $ at the moment.
