advice on p bass necks

Hi all :)

I'v been told for my 21st that I can get a bass, so I'm going to be getting a P bass. I really like basses with thick necks. I really like the thought of having a mike dirnt bass, trouble is I'm unable to try one out.

So, I went into Dawsons into manchester earlier today and tried the basses with the thickest necks I could find, as the mike dirnt has a really thick neck. I tried the steve harris sig and the classic 50's p bass. I liked the steve harris bass' neck, I have big hands so the thickness wan't an issue. However, I loved the 50's p bass - the neck, how it played...

So I was just wondering if those who have experience of the mike dirnt bass could tell me where it's at in comparison to these two basses. Other suggestions are welcome, but keep in mind that I have a limited budget: no 4 figure basses!

I'm unfamiliar with the Dirnt, but if you loved the way that '50s played... why not get it?
Basses are made of wood. They're all going to be a little different. Even two of the same model made on the same day will differ. If you found one you really like a lot, grab it. You could order a Dirnt based on a description here and it could end up being nothing like you expected. Just a thought....

50s neck is not as thick as dirnt

& my advice is the squier is just fine if you're on a tight budget. you can always upgrade pickups or other parts but that is the neck you want--thick C. Modern C or C aren't quite the same; wider & flatter.

The Steve Harris apparently has the biggest Fender P neck you can get. But that's a 4-figure bass.

If you loved the 50s P, I'd say go for it. But if you really want that Dirnt, you should try it first.

Thanks for all the help! :)

This sounds a bit stupid, because ultimately a bass is all about the sound, but the 50's doesn't look great in my honest opinion. If I'm buying a bass it needs to look purdy. I'd have to change the gold scratchplate, and I know there are plenty of threads where people are looking to do the same but are unsuccessful.

is the steve harris neck thicker or thinner than the mike dirnt?

From my experience, I have played a Squier Dirnt and thought it felt and sounded very solid. Have not played the actual Fender Dirnt.

BUT, I own and love and cherish my 50's P. I have tiny hands but the classic 50's neck plays like butter. The tone is fantastic and I love, love, love this bass.

I am sure you can guess my suggestion.

yeah only trouble with that is its £1800. I'm not saying i want the thickest neck i can find. What I'm saying is I've got my heart set on a sunburst fender mike dirt p bass, and I was just wondering if its neck is slimmer than the steve harris p bass neck

I play my Fender dirnt now since 7 or 8 years. Still the only Bass i wouldn't sell. The neck shape is my favourite so far, nice thick neck and it's still easy to play on the lower frets. The bass is a good mix of the right ingredients, like the Badass II and the 59' custom pickup. But i never tried a Steve Harris so i can't compare. Good luck finding the right Bass for you:)
