Advice on Passive J Bass pickups

Before spending $$$ for pickups, have you tried a nice fresh set of Rotosound RS66LD strings? What kind of rig are you playing it through?
I've only had experience with one Geddy Lee (belongs to another local bass player I run into occasionally). It sounded like, well, Geddy Lee. Plenty of bright and punchy, no lack of low end either. Nice bass!

I love the bass to be honest i was probing the bass community to see if someone else had made any modifications and had bang up results. I have some expendable cash to put into my bass and so i was curious. But all in all i love it. Maybe it would be best not to mess with a good thing?
