I do feel that a rack case is a requirement to protect valuable equipment during transport. Any of us who have been "playing out" for some time have had stuff fall out of vans, off stages, kicked over by fellow musicians, the whole range of possibilities that happens to our gear. I've not used rack bags but I wonder how much protection they offer.
Tuners: I have two Korg rack tuners neither of which is in use. If your instrument has stable tuning they are pointless. I use a Seiko hand held but rarely need to use it. I check at the start of the evening and it sits on top of my amp for the rest of the evening.
Rack power units: I use Carvin AC120 series. The only racks that they are in have more that one power cable. I use them to keep the cables neat. They do offer surge protection and line filtering. You can get the same from a power bar if you want to go that route.
Rack case sizing: Anything more than a 4U case starts to get awkward to carry and position. The handles are in the centre of the case but rack cases are always front heavy.
