affordable toneful bass head

i'm on the process of buying equipment for the metalcore band i'm in. so far i have a ibanez gsr200, ampeg 810e, and for a head i've been playing through a solid-state marshall guitar head. the head i'm thinking about getting is a Hartke HA3500. me budget is $450 or less, what do you think?

A Sunn Coliseum 300. Look on Ebay. Good for $300-350 MAX. Hows that sound to ya?

Ashdown MAG300 is a good choice, as is a GK400RB, 800RB, or 700RB. Look at used ones, you'll get better value.

Lots of good choice though, and it all depends on what YOU are looking for. I just listed a few easy to find ones that are good "all around" amps. Lots of punch, reliable, plenty of power for most situations.

FWIW I'm A/Bing a Mesa M-Pulse 360 with an AG500SC at the moment and the Aggy is coming off second best.

Depends what you mean by 'toneful'. IMO that tends to mean tubish.... ie: not Hartke.

Absolutely - I can tell you from 1st hand experience, that the 700rb-II sounds great through an SVT810e, and will get more than loud enough...

You can absolutely get a used LMII for 450 or less, and they show up in the TB classifieds all the time. If you're schlepping heavy gear like an 810 already, though, you might look at one of the bigger Carvin heads, like the BX1200 or B1500 to take full advantage of your speakers, though even used they might stretch your budget somewhat.

For just a few more clams, you could actually get a new 700rbII. Call RMC Audio or email RMC Audio for a quote. I got mine a couple of years ago for 499. I know they raised prices a bit since, but I don't believe by much.
