In the interest of furthering this discussion: what about your DB 115 has not met your expectations? Or, if you are considering purchasing but have not just yet- what is giving you pause?

Was just giving things time to unfold. My story goes as follows, I'm new to buying bass gear and have posted asking some basic questions in regards for studio application only. I don't need volume per se' just tones and vibe. that doesn't mean I wont get an 8x10 though! I'm a drummer turned recording enthusiast(as not to denigrate the engineering field) I've played with many bass players, in years past(in a band setting) so, I'm no stranger to the gear and how it, "should" sound for the track, however...I took a break from the musician life a few years back, due to life changes and am re entering it again.... through the studio so, As a recovering musician... I'm starting over again and seeing what's out there. and looking for the guru's that seem to be with bass gear, as I was with drum gear years ago.

That said, I'm new to this forum, and just starting to feel my way around the new and exciting world of bass players and their gear. I just bought a few cabs Aguilar DB series 115, 2x10 & 112w/t and a new portaflex 50t. I'm into gear so I'll be getting a few more cabs from Aguilar and Berg for now. knowing me I'll have about a dozen or so heads and cabs before long so. I'm in this for the long haul.

I'm just looking to mix and match heads and cabs for tone and vibe. After looking around to see what's still out there from my day. I've learned that the Mesa power house line is sadly gone. and Eden has diminished as well. Bummer, I LOVE super heavy birch cabs! hence my attraction to the Aguilar DB series. anyhoo. that's what I'm about and here for. thanks to all that help.

At one point I owned two DB 115's. I always loved their sound. So did my guitar player. To my ears, they go deep with a somewhat forward midrange and a muted top end. It's a cab that plays well with others (amps, that is). The only downside for me was the weight of 70 lbs as I got older.

Welcome to TB. Don't worry, the TB brain trust should be along. Sounds like you already have great options at your disposal. Certainly, you have Aguilar cabinets covered, which allows for using them individually or in combination with each other. Mesa Subway has gotten great reviews here, so much so that I purchased the TT800 head (I'm exploring it with headphones for now). I'm saving up for the cabinet- leaning towards the Mesa Subway 410. Bergantino also gets lots of love. I'm new-ish here too, but I've learned so much from everyone's experiences. Be warned...you will be encouraged to buy more gear! Have you checked out the Recording section of the forum? There may be more specific info there for what you may be planning.

Nothing wrong with heavy cabinets, if you don't have to move them.

You may find that as you begin looking at and listening to new gear (which is mostly lighter and smaller) that technology has done for the bass world what it did for personal computing and cellular phones. Mesa, Berg and Aguilar all offer excellent options as do Fender and Ampeg. I think you may well discover that the days of having to have large heavy amps to get a particular tone or reproduce that tone at high volume are long gone.

That said, many of the newer products are voiced and have features that appeal to today's trends in music. Some tend to be designed around legacy product voicing and performance and of course there is always plenty of legacy gear available on the used market. It really comes down to personal preference, budget, and the brands/models that get you closest to your tone goals.

I have a killer DB412, and from my experience and ears they are voiced to project clearly into the mix appropriate for the bass and still provide ALL to oooomph in the low end. I use a GK700RB to power it but between experimenting with EQ and my Tech21 SVT pedal, this cab can pair and deliver with more vintage and tube voiced heads superbly.

If you are looking to complete your studio with a variety of sound options, IMO you have plenty of cabs to work with so if you want suggestions for heads. Beyond the Ampeg, Fender options definitely check out GK (super quiet), Aguilar Tone Hammers (warmer), and Darkglass (modern with great internal drive/gain channels).

Old thread i realize but couldn't resist. No remorse here, i also have an sl110 and 112 but this thing just kicks them for the growly tone i like. Yes its heavy but its just my home rig so i never have to move it, tried other combinations but cant seem to let this go.

Back in the good, old days. Back when my back was in better shape. And yes, I gigged this stack on numerous occasions.
