Aguilar OBP-3 passive tone ...?

Seems bizarre that the passive tone would change that much unless the preamp wasn't true bypass.

Anywho, I have a bass with the OBP-1 and one with an OBP-3...they are both relatively quiet.

I have an OBP-1 with the controls of an M4V. When you engage the preamp the only tone control you have is the stacked bass/treble control and the passive tone control is by-passed. I realize the tone is scooped, but I'd like to be able to play around with some mids as well. With the Bart preamp, the passive tone control worked when the pre amp was engaged and I like the extra on board tone shaping capability. I already have a custom M4V (alder/maple/ebony) and was looking to give this one(swamp ash/maple/spalted maple) a funkier sound if that makes sense?

He probably had it wired like this, which takes the passive tone control out of the circuit when in active mode

Like I said, I noticed a significant difference. Had the wiring checked and everything seemed fine. Active tone controls did not work in passive mode (so that wasn't an issue). Live the bass could not sit well in the mix in either mode. I considered selling the bass because I figured that the passive signal should be neutral. It wasn't. Switching preamps meant that in passive mode the bass suddenly sat properly in the mix.

Something was either not wired correctly or there was another strange problem.

A correctly wired active passive switch completely removes the pre from the circuit, as can be seen here

Yes, it has been said numerous times already in this thread that it can be done with ANY preamp. You seem to have not been listening.

The only extra work you would have to do would be to piggy back a tone control off of the volume knob. The extra work would be minimal, if that is too much then you may just need to stick with the Bassmods preamps.

Buy a preamp from some place that offers prewiring service, then. This is a nonstandard feature, so it is not likely to be offered by many vendors in a prewired configuration.

To answer the original question, I have an Aguilar OBP-3 wired with a passive tone control. The passive tone control works in both active and passive modes. And I really like it.

I also have a Nordstrand 3b with a passive tone control. It also works in both active and passive modes and I really like it.

If you want a passive tone control, it's just a simple matter of adding it to the circuit. If you want to hire somebody to do so, it shouldn't be difficult for anybody with basic wiring skills. If I can do it, anybody can do it.

Awesome ! If you could post a video of the two preamps in action that would be totally cool ! If not, what's the difference in tone between the Nordy and Aguilar?

Aguilar is more aggressive and the controls are very touchy. Nordstrand is more mild and the EQ controls are useable throughout their range. For example, on the Aguilar, just a slight movement of the bass knob seems equivalent to cranking the bass knob on the Nordstrand. The Aguilar has ridiculous amounts of boost/cut that aren't really useable beyond a certain point (to me anyway). Both are nice preamps, but I prefer the Nordstrand. I also like how it has adjustable output level via a trim pot to match other basses or whatever. The two preamps have different treble frequency centers, but I seldom boost treble and if I want to cut treble I usually reach for the passive tone knob.

I'm sorta leaning towards the Aguilar OBP-3 preamp (2 pickup, 4 knob, 1 switch);
Control Configuration

1. Volume
2. Volume
3. Mid Push/Pull (Freq. Selection)
4. Treble/Bass Stack
5. Active/Passive Switch. - Thing is, I'd like to have the option of a passive tone control when I'm in passive mode. I know there's guys that have this setup; Can you tell me if there's a control knob for passive mode, Or if the passive mode is just always "wide open"? I'd like to be able to roll the Treble/Bass off/on as needed when in passive mode. Thanks.

Your can use a pasive tone in your Obp 3 just go to best bass gear they have the diagrams so you can adapt your preamp... Another thing that you may have to do is conect all the pots to the ground, and shield the cavity with cooper foild... This is what i dice and i use Aguilar and nordtrand preamp... The y aré good nords aré moré quite than Aguilar but with cooper foild it get ready ok the noise...
