AI Amp Modeling Next Gen: A Frankenstein Scenario

There are a lot of factors regarding how someone plays that are not really related to tone. The choices a player makes depends on what's going on around them, where they have been in the music, where they are, and where they are going. You don't need any sort of instrument or amp to modify what someone plays to sound like someone else. A new bassline would be generated from scratch by an AI. In other words, a human is no longer playing the line.

If you want something that a player controls, I suspect sampling and latency would be a big factor. AFAIK the sampling problem gets worse as the frequency goes lower; this is because the wavelength get's longer as the frequency goes lower. Complex processing takes time...enough time so that a player senses a delay between when they play a note and when the notes pops out the other side of the processor.

Perhaps some sort of parallel processing could be developed to make the latency. insignificant.
 
The answer to that is that it would play the note that you would have intended to play if you were a better player, instead of the note that you actually played :roflmao:

I think it's probably more complex than you think, because there's a question of sound (amp simulation and the like) but also a question of fixing the playing technique. In real time. For example, if you play a note ahead of time, it's easy (in theory) to delay that note to fix its timing, but what about if you play a note too late?

Kids who want the instant win without the effort will want one just to feel better than they are.

This pretty much already happened, long ago, and it's had a pretty dramatic impact on music and the music industry IMHO. The resulting music tends to be sterile and lacking depth, nuance, and complexity. The songs would sound way more interesting if played by good musicians.

One problem is less and less people are actually learning an instrument, so there are fewer good musicians to play. Also since automation is much cheaper than paying real players, there is no longer enough money in the market to attract skilled musicians, or motivate them to develop the necessary skills. It's only going to get worse. But most people in the future won't know any better.

My impression is this problem is behind the current Hollywood strike. Unfortunately it may be a lost cause. Over the last year there has been a huge transition from scripted shows to reality BS and game shows. I believe the majority of scripted shows have been cancelled, most likely due to the price of producing them. The cancellations were announced before the strike. So what leverage do the strikers have to guarantee their future?

I can't speak for everyone, but this week the only show I will watch is the final to American Ninja Warrior which ran last night. I have watched this show for several years because it was the best thing on in it's time slot...good enough to pass an hour. As of this Monday, IMHO it was the best thing on for the entire week, which is pathetic.

From my limited experience...I could imagine AI getting leveraged for amp modeling or simulation, in a way similar to DLSS from Nvidia for graphics upscaling. While not as good as native resolution, the tradeoff with DLSS can be pretty remarkable when it comes to performance gains. Perhaps a learning algorithm where it plays certain tones into an amp + speaker and starts building a simulation of how the amp would react to various types of input could be how to get there?

As far as dynamics and style from the player go, the AI can't adhere to these parameters and fix the note you forgot to play...if it did, then we're talking about a recording, not something real-time. For tasks we can't be bothered to do, I can see AI being incredibly useful....like fixing your bandmate's text messages or being your Social Media and Promotions Manager :smug:
 
New music creation tools are now being pushed with the message, "be a music creator without having to hassle with learning music theory or how to play an instrument." I believe that message resonates with many people who are into clicking on something and getting the result in two seconds. TikTok has figured it out.

Agreed, what is the long term lifespan of such products, and the price threshold that make them viable?

Frankly, I suspect people who fall for the "be an instant musician without having to put in any effort" message are not thinking about product lifespans. All they want are more clicks. Today. ASAP.
 
Well, what we need are AI-generated audiences.

Seems to me, the world is inundated with music without enough audiences to consume it all. So we can have AI generated compositions, performed by AI generated musical instruments, recorded by AI controlled recording systems, produced by AI controlled editing and mixing, marketed and distributed by AI algorithms, obviously need to be consumed by AI generated audiences since there aren't enough actual human beings willing to do the work of listening to all of this content.

Overkill. I bet 95% of all music consumed serves the function of background noise. Supposedly Spotify is making tons of dough off AI-generated music (no royalties!!) broadcast through generic music playlists. Most people don't notice or care.

To me, all modern music that under 30s listen to could be AI as (a) I never listen to it and (b) it all sounds the same and (c) get off my lawn or I'll play more Thrak era King Crimson.

I do wonder if in five years, artists will be getting appreciative tweets from AI.

In other news, it's the anniversary of the date in 1966 and manufactured music par excellence, The Monkees. I'm not sure AI will be able to mug like that for the camera at least until late December

On the contrary it's a form of low-key money making. What people are doing is spamming Spotify, Apple Music, and other services with thousands albums, each claimed to be by some reasonably-popular-but-not-huge musician. The music then gets slotted into the automatically-generated playlists of their fans. The frauds don't make any more money per play than legitimate artists do, but like all other spammers they make up for it with volume -- it probably doesn't take much effort to automate the process of generating and uploading more albums a day than any respected artist could produce in a lifetime.

Our own Dr. Cheese recently-ish posted a thread here about an album that one of these spammers attributed to Marcus Miller. I've seen similar threads on other boards, always about very bland noodly new-agey albums allegedly by people you've heard of but not currently huge stars: Fiona Apple, for example. I wouldn't be surprised if for every one of these that gets taken down there are hundreds more that stay up on the streaming services, because listeners aren't paying close enough attention to notice that a given track seems out of character, they just figure Spotify made a bad guess about the music you like.
 
As if we needed more distance from reality already. There's enough fakery in the world now we need a spare planet to contain it. Artificial intelligence has one major flaw; it's an artificial version of human intelligence, which can be dodgy.

So if the bass can play itself, who needs the meat puppet standing there holding it up?

What you want is AI to generate songs that have a predictable chance of being a hit, or greatly admired by musicians. That you could then copyright, and thus convince a popular artist to create a cover. Some people are using the LLM AI's to generate songs. The question of AI work having a copyright is a legal issue that needs to be worked out. I don't think anybody would be able to tell AI from a Person creating a song. There's been enough drugs and alcohol involved in writing songs that AI will not likely be detectable as non-human :)

is this why it is legal for an amp modeler to copy a popular amplifier’s tone with impunity? Or isn’t it?
