There are a lot of factors regarding how someone plays that are not really related to tone. The choices a player makes depends on what's going on around them, where they have been in the music, where they are, and where they are going. You don't need any sort of instrument or amp to modify what someone plays to sound like someone else. A new bassline would be generated from scratch by an AI. In other words, a human is no longer playing the line.
If you want something that a player controls, I suspect sampling and latency would be a big factor. AFAIK the sampling problem gets worse as the frequency goes lower; this is because the wavelength get's longer as the frequency goes lower. Complex processing takes time...enough time so that a player senses a delay between when they play a note and when the notes pops out the other side of the processor.
Perhaps some sort of parallel processing could be developed to make the latency. insignificant.
