Hi:
I just did a tour of Scandinavia in March with EUB and Clarus. I used whatever speakers they had over there (mainly they had Warwicks, Trace Elliot and SWR cabs). Like you we had PA support in the nicer rooms but in Denmark we did a lot of schools during day and clubs at night and for that whole leg we commandeered a 4ohm Peavey cab (2 tens and a 15) that worked great for the last week and a half and was not run through PA.

I'm going back at the end of October for another month in Europe and I'm taking the same setup as before but if I had a budget like yours I'd go with a Focus and a decent 12in cab. I saw a Focus on sale for $925 (I think in the Talkbass gear for sale section). That still leaves about $500 and change for good cab. I mention the Focus because of the extra headroom (which would probably make EB sound a little more ballsy than the Clarus) and also because of the convenience of switcing to 230 wattage. I had the first Coda with a downfiring speaker and a 5" midrange. I couldn't get any clarity out of it. My first gig with it was in a room with short carpet, and it was a nightmare...just a dull thud. Then again, I was mainly using a Realist with it which probably wasn't a good mix. However, when I switched to the WM12 I was a happy camper for quite a while.

The Coda just didn't have a "forward" sound at all, which wasn't the natural sound of *my bass*...it also had very little volume. For some reason I get much more volume out of the Clarus with other speakers than I ever got out of the Coda.

I can't imagine an electric gig where the Coda would do the job as well as a Clarus + 1x12 setup. I dunno. It just didn't work for me.

i use a gk mb150 and a raven labs pmb (2 channel pre with mic input) and i gig with a doublebass and bass guitar... GREAT, flexible and uber-portable combo! the whole rig was way under a grand...

ps - raven labs just closed up shop but you can still find a few new units around. a friend has one at Invalid Link Removed. also, rick turner's new outfit, d-star, has something very similar called "solstice"

Are you using the raven blender directly into the
effects return jack of the GK? I think it sounds
much better than one preamp going into another
preamp. This has been a very pleasing combo for
me too.

yep, i am as well. thanks for catching that! you're right, the fx return is a line input and bypasses the preamp. but you can still us the gk's eq to adjust the total mix eq if needed...

in a pinch, i also used the raven with a powered pa speaker (jbl i think?) and that worked well too.

I am getting an used AI Coda. Thanks for your inputs so much. I know a Coda won't be able to cure my GAS but at least it will serve well. And I saved money for an EUB flight case.
