Double Bass Alabama Principal?

Have you looked at the results of the other recent auditions? For example, Dallas and National? Those pay considerably more than Alabama, were there IU people in the finals? Not saying anything against IU, but Alabama is one isolated case. IU is a good school, but it is just one of many. IU bass players do not have the greatest reputation. I can say this, because I am an alum of the school, as well as some others. Posts like this are part of the reason the IU reputation has gone down the drain. Congrats to the finalists of Alabama, well deserved. I'm sure the reason they made it that far is because of their hard work and dedication, not which school they go to.

What exactly is the "bad reputation" that IU alumni have? In my professional experience, IU training is met with nothing but absolute respect.

At the end of the day it really is all about hard work, and the reason the handful of schools win the jobs isn't about the school per se as much as it is about those schools attracting the top "tallent." That being said, we have every right to be proud of our alumni for their efforts, and to show school pride.

Brian Perry of UNT won the Dallas position. Not that I'd smack-talk or boast about my alma mater or anything like that.

Easy there, bub. I ain't smack talking. I'm just proud. We have every right to be proud. Regarding backing it up, nobody in their right mind is calling into question the quality of the bass studios at IU... The school attracts fine students, and has a long standing history of pushing players to their full potential. Everything said above (positive as well as negative) could be said for a number of other schools as well.

I'm personally hoping that the appointment of Mr. Muroki brings the IU bass program back to the golden heyday of the late 90's, when I was there, walking amongst giants. Cheers.

I didn't say you were smacking talk. You asked what the IU stereotype was, I answered your question. And IU absolutely attracts great players. Being one of the biggest music schools in the country with several orchestras to fill, it also attracts some not so great players. And unfortunately, those less than average players are the ones usually heard talking smack and boasting. Hence, at the schools/summer festivals I have attended, IU is not always looked upon kindly by bassists at other schools. And rightly so, I believe. Work hard, keep your head down and get the job.

CHEERS.

I'm a college dropout and I even think that if you can fork the dough to go to Jacobs, you deserve every bragging right. That's one expensive peice of paper and a lot of time spent getting it. There are some very phenomenal players there. The one's who can't put their bass where there mouth is will definitely pay for it with their quality of life!

Just how it works bro

I'm not sure why people need to affiliate with success via studio association. Do the others that are in the winner's studio somehow feel that they share in the winner's success? Do the others in the winner's studio feel validated in their decision to attend the school where the winner attended. Do the others in the winner's studio feel a new or renewed hope that they will someday also be the winner of an audition? Meh.

Congrats to Dan Carson. He must be an incredible talent.

I think it's just a result of a very limited line of thinking, usually influenced by audition 'jockeys' who get more wrapped up in the competition than the actual music. Having been in that situation myself, I think you do feel validated because you see one of your colleagues achieve something and feel as though you're on the right track because you're following it too. It took me a long time to realize that you don't represent anyone but yourself at these types of things.

Anyone want some Taco Bell?

Taco Bell recently added the Baja Blast Freeze to its menu. It's the perfect resolution for the ever-rising question of whether to get Baja Blast or a Fruitista Freeze. I think Dan Carson would probably like us to all come to some resolution and realize that it's cool to see peers do well, but it's really the personal practice put in that seals the deal. Bass can be fun!

Well said, couldn't agree more. I'm really happy when my friends in my studio win jobs. But I know very well it's because of their own hard work, not because of the school they chose.
