I'm a big fan of Alan Thomson, superb musicianship on John Martyn's albums, seen him live a few times, he also played a lot of session stuff with Rick Wakeman. Out of curiosity, does anyone know what basses he plays? Last time I saw him he had a couple of custom-looking basses, both matching bodies, both 4-string, one fretted the other fretless. They sounded heavenly.

Five and a half years later and no responses? I too am a great fan of Alan's work and similar to Al have been interested in finding out what basses Alan was (and maybe still is) using. Here's a pic showing the fretless, obviously a custom build, you can just see the headstock has a somewhat distinctive notch in the centre, Phenomenal tone Alan has - would love to find out more about this bass.

And now we are on a roll! I first saw Alan when he was about 18 and he was using that same fretless, just with different pickups.

Well, I finally found this: Invalid Link Removed and he is indeed on Facebook under Alan Thomson Bass. Seems like the fretless is a 1980 build by Graham Noden Invalid Link Removed
