I recommend using headphones to listen to the tone of these 2 series two alembic basses .

Yeah, listened on a set of decent headphones. It's a nice tone, but not my tone. I've never liked quilt either. So... horses for courses! For those that love them and can afford them, I tip my hat!

The irony of a 10-year-old zombie thread complaining about Alembic prices in 2013 is that now in 2024 we wish Alembic prices were only what they were in 2013!

Go figure I spoke with Mica Wikersham last week ; she asked me if I wanted to order anything now because prices are going up in a couple of weeks!!!

I agree they're expensive, but on the other hand, I build and restore stained glass windows, and I can tell you from my own experience in custom labor that what they're asking is not unreasonable. The Activator pickup I had in my fretless alone was far and away the best pickup I have ever heard. In the end I did have to trade it to get an instrument that better suited my needs, but I would never doubt the quality of their product.

Sure, for that level of woodworking. That said, at $1,700 for a pair of active J pickups, they had better come with eight shares of Apple stock.

The price isn't the deterrent for me, though it would really have to be a perfect example for me to shell it out.

The main reasons I don't want one is the weight and ergonomics. Fro the price of 1 Alembic, I am getting 6 Bordwell 30" basses built to my exact specs, including the fact that they're all under 7 pounds.

6 for the price of one, 2 for the weight of one.

I just looked up the price of the Epic and it's $10,975. Years ago I bought a nice new Vermillion top Epic for my son at Guitar Center for $700. Wish I had hung on to that one.
