I find rounds work best if you go for a modern hifi sound. But I don't do hifi so yeah, YMMV. I never got the fascination with rounds and I still wonder how they became a sort of industry standard if everyone buries the bass in the mix anywa - oh, now I get it. ;)

Actually I like a big round sound with a lot of definition and sustain if the song calls for it. In some situations, I like the sound of flats...where they are called for. I would not be opposed to keeping a p-bass with flats on it. Making it my only string? I could never do it.

Also, I don't really know what you mean by hi fi but if it means that I like the full spectrum from my bass string I guess that is pretty accurate. It could be my fingers as well. I just like the way rounds speak better.

I don't know what you mean by "modern hi-fi." I seem to recall John Entwistle, Jack Bruce, Tommy Shannon, Sting, Geddy Lee, John Paul Jones, Gene Simmons, Bootsy Collins, Lemmy, Billy Sheenhan, Jaco, and Chris Squire all using roundwounds. None of them sounded buried in the mix. At all.

If that's hi-fi, then count me in.

I have a blacktop jazz which was originally strung with rounds. It was thin and tinny sounding.
I put some flats on it and that bass came alive, it was like night and day, much better.
Flats and p pups do go together, believe it!

I don't always use rounds, but when I do, they're Sunbeams...

It boggles my mind that so many people would willingly limit themselves to using only flatwounds. But like we're so fond of saying around here, different strokes for different folks. If people want to limit their sound so drastically, that's their business.

I will say though, there's a reason Jamerson had no work by the end of his career.

Well now I'm using flatwounds. I'm shocked at how similar they are to roundwounds (I'm using Rotosound flatwounds, btw).

They are gritty and bright, but since they aren't roundwounds, they have just a bit less overtones than roundwounds. Roundwounds sound more buzzy in comparison.

The sound is so unique, and they make a mean roaring sound when I pluck them hard. These strings are so cool, I wonder how long it will take them to sound like regular flatwounds.
