I think that is just a sorry excuse for a bass. Who are we kidding look deep down and realize that that thing is no longer a bass and neither is it a guitar. Its some weird hybrid, the whole point of a bass is to keep the low end. I think any "bass" that goes higher than a G string is just for a confused bassist or those with secret desires to play guitar but don't want to feel as if they betrayed the bass community.

I'm all for experiementing, pushing the BASS envelope, carving new BASS frontiers, but i've gotta say, that is NOT bass playing. The extent of his bass playing is hitting a few fat strings here and there in between playing classical guitar.

I see a lot of close minded remarks, is what I see.
Music is music, why do some feel the need to limit creativity, or limit someone's need to express themselves? For the sake of self expression, one is not obligated to play any bass notes if they don't want to. Just like some of you may not feel obligated to play anything above a G string. It's an instrument, above being a bass guitar. It's used in creative manners. People are eventually going to have to accept that concept.
I'm sure if he'd have played 'bass' notes, there'd be sniveling remarks of how he was playing too fast/too much.

I don't think anybody said anything about limiting creativity or wishing for someone to not express themselves. I think your comment is a bit presumptuous in this regard.
People have different preferences, likes, dislikes and everyone is entitled to those differences in opinion. It does not mean they are 'closed minded'.
As far as playing bass notes on a bass...its not called a bass for nothing.
I play with very similar style to Trip, but about a tenth as well, and I get a heap of flac from people saying, "hey man, that's not how you play the bass!" i play the bass how I want, so what if I chuck some melody in.
This is for all you people who think "OOOOH HE'S PLAYING HIGH WHY DON'T YOU PLAY THE GAYTAR" Do you say that about Stanley Clarke for playing his Piccolo bass? I have to say I'd rather hear someone play that on a bass than a guitar. The bass just sounds better high or low.

I don't see the big deal? Is what your telling me it is alright for him to play it if he played it on guitar? I'd listen to that if he was on stage. It was good. It was great. It was better than what you could probably do. Whats the big deal if he didn't play low enough for you. It was on a 8 string "BASS" so I wouldn't call it not playing the bass cause it totally is. I'm sure tonnes of guitar players couldn't even amount to that kind of playing.
Aye I agree it just depends on what kind of sound u want ur bass to produce. Saying that people who play with a pick suck is basically the same as someone who slaps (a.k.a Me) saying that people who finger pluck suck.

I think what people are saying is that what he's playing does not function as 'bass playing'... I agree with them, but that's fine by me because music is more important than just the bass line
let's not get musical function mixed up with instrumentation... just because something's played on a bass guitar doesn't necessarily mean it functions as 'bass playing'
judging from his 'chops' i'd say this dude probably plays some incredible bass too... would love to hear it

The instrument and the function it usually fulfils are not permanently locked together. There is no reason to avoid playing parts in higher registers if the bass role is not needed at that point or another instrument is covering it. I frequently play parts as the second guitarist in my band, so we can have chordal backing whilst the real guitarist plays a melody.
Do those of you that abhor this non-bass bass playing play constantly, leaving no space? If you do, maybe you need to think about your arrangements. If you don't, then try thinking if there are opportunities when you're laying out that you could bring something positive to the music by adding higher register parts.
We wouldn't have this problem if our instrument had a different name.
