All bassist that play with a pick suck..

If you're going to get an 8-string bass and just wank around on the higher strings with a pick, why not just play guitar?

I have to admit, I kinda had the same thought while watching, but it's still very cool. I think an 8 string bass would be the perfect tool for a half-guitard like me.
The pick is just a tool to get a different sound. At least to me. Have you ever seen the Tripster play in person? I have seen him live like four times. It is a very amazing experience. He is a very versatlie player. Four string, five string or 8 string. Fretted or fretless. With a pick or without. Thumping, plucking, slapping, tapping, hammer-ons, strumming, picking, etc., etc,. etc. Single note basslines or chords. His use of dynamics will send shivers up your spine.
Hint: Forget that he uses a pick and just listen to the music. Enjoy!

I dig that! And, i typically hate bass solos, they bore me to tears, ususally. I like bass in a band mix. But, your solos mixed guitar-like licks with the tone of a bass....sorta like hearing two instruments at once. All the negative remarks should be ignored, unaccompanied bass should be interesting. I like it!!
Well said...versatile. And he respects all the tools necessary to create music. He is part of a legion of artists that is expanding what electric bass guitar contributes to music. Pick is just another style of bass, like slapping and plucking. So many styles of music just wouldnt have worked without a pick bassist. Punk for one. Because you can't replicate the tone that you get from using a pick any other way.
im kinda mixed here, while i do think that experimenting and pushing the limits is productive and leads to great innovation (the pickups...which im sure at least some of us are a fan of) he did sorta leave his lower strings to themself a bit too much....i'd be sad if i were the thicker strings =(
Other than that, hell...picking is fun in my opinion, i don't think its good to JUST pick all the time but it's fun and useful, everyone should at least make an effort to get decent with one.
And one last thing....I bet this has happened more than once to that guy:

Bassist: Yes, I'd like to take out a loan for 3 Grand
Teller: ...is this for a house or car payment?
Bassist: Nope...restringing my bass *smile*
Other than that, hell...picking is fun in my opinion, i don't think its good to JUST pick all the time but it's fun and useful, everyone should at least make an effort to get decent with one.
