I never thought of John and Paul as singers. I think of them as brilliant artist and songwriters. Creative geniuses.
Sure I’m not singing “Oh Darling” and “Don’t Let Me Down” anytime soon lol so they could sing. Great singers even. But #12? Even at #26 too high. Too many great singers out there and in the past.
They had amazing harmonies. You could make an argument that John, Paul and George were the greatest harmony singers in history, can’t think of any off hand that were better at harmonies, #1 on a list of greatest harmony singers perhaps. But they probably wouldn’t make my top 30 or 40 as singers alone.
Btw. On this list Barbara Streisand was 147 lol. Ridiculous. Celine Dion is not even on the list. Marvin Gaye was #20. For me he’s at least top 5. That’s ridiculous in my opinion too. Bob Dylan who is one of the greatest songwriters of all time but a terrible singer is top 20. Lol.
These list are very often more about politics and nonsense.
Their just trying to sell their product….

There is something so unique about John’s voice that I can’t quite put my finger on it or explain it. The way he expresses himself is remarkable really and the listener can feel and hear John grappling with the emotion, pain or whatever underlying issue there may be that might have preoccupied him at the time. It is a phenomenon that stirs up something deep in the soul. I just can’t explain it.

The Lennon/McCartney ratings are no surprise to me as I've read that the founder of Rolling Stone was a big fan of Lennon and carried an open grudge against McCartney (and Wings) for breaking up the Beatles! I would expect, at least, some legacy of that grudge from them.

Bob Dylan, and his eccentric voice, is rated No. 15! :rolleyes: That says a lot, right there.

From the "foreword" to the list:

"When Rolling Stone first published its list of the 100 Greatest Singers in 2008, we used an elaborate voting process that included input from well-known musicians. The results skewed toward classic rock and singers from the Sixties and Seventies. Well, these events have pushed me back into the Beatles. I am a huge fan anyway but coupled with the fact that many younger musicians view them as ancient, archaic, golden oldies type music, it makes me just want to get into the old albums and talk about them and their records even more. The Beatles were like "magic" back in the day and of course I can't expect the next generations to understand "that particular special time period" but I wondered if anybody else feels like talking about the Beatles.

Favorite songs, records, album covers, instruments and whatever anybody wants to talk about, I would definitely be interested in reading it.
To start,
I was thinking about which Beatle songs were under-rated and wondered which three tunes would be on your list?

I think I would go with:
1) Bad Boy
2) It's Only Love
3) What You're Doing

Any thoughts from the bass thumping brethren?

I’m five years older than you, which means that I was born two years after The Beatles first US release.
Still, I discovered their music in my pre-teen years, and fortunately my best friend at the time was also a fan, so we could nerd out together on Beatles albums and our guitar lessons.

In my mind they were the most important band, and most important composers of popular music during the twentieth century, and there is no possible way that I could choose only three favorite songs or albums. There are just too many gems to choose from in their catalog.

Sometimes I am in an early Beatles mood. Sometimes I rock the middle years, sometimes it’s a Let It Be day.
All great stuff, and Sir Paul’s bass and guitar work was always just what the song needed. Not to mention his staggering vocal range of A1 to C6! So was everyone else’s contributions, but this is a bass player centric site after all. Heh heh.

To me, Steve Perry had to be much higher than his 62 or 82 whatever they had him, I didn’t even see Ian Gillan at all, (and I think Tom Jones was lower than I thought fair but I don’t really remember).
Plus guys like John Farnham and Jimmy Barnes should be up near Perry and Gillan on ability but I guess they miss out on the numbers of units moved and dollars made coming from our small market.

My birthday the other day. Kids found and bought me the dvd of Help! I had heard it was crappy but I wanted to collect all their movies.
Watched it yesterday, and it wasn’t crap. Yes it was corny, but just typical mid 60s British comedy corny. I liked it well enough, it was Worth a look. I’ll go through the bonus disc of stuff in a couple of days.

So, I have the two movies and Yellow Submarine now. As well as the Get Back set. I don’t know if Magical Mystery Tour is available, or if the original Let it Be is available now. I watched The Beatles cartoon series as a kid and would like to see them again, I guess someone has them on YouTube. :D

Just sharing some really cool (and affordable) Beatles related artwork. I posted on TB about this artist back in 2016, but never on this forum. Really cool pieces to add to your music room or office.

The artist's name is George Morgan (George Morgan Illustration) and his work can be found on Etsy. There's even a 2023 Beatles calendar that's available. You can find many of The Beatles guitars, basses and a few drum kits (He's done plenty of other artist instruments as well.) I have no affiliation with George, I'm only a satisfied customer.
