Nice! With you posting this, I just realized we play 9 of the 14 songs on Rubber Soul. I hope we add I'm Looking Through You and You Won't See Me sometime in the future. I especially love how Paul's bassline on ILTY wraps the song - perfection!View attachment 3747850 Thought I would share these thoughts on the Beatles. One of my favorite albums of theirs is Rubber Soul which I believe was released December 3rd, 1965, the year I was born! My dad bought the album and of course I heard it billions of times as a kid growing up as well as throughout my life. So I thought I would rank the tracks on the album according to the way I see it. This is totally subjective and not meant to offend. All the songs are great so here we go:
14) Run For Your Life
Well, something has to be last and although it has has a nice groove and it is a good little ditty, the song never really spoke to me. I know some folks really dig this tune and it’s a favorite of some, I just don’t connect with this one as much as the other songs on the album.
13) What Goes On
Killer Ringo tune! Love this song and I think I hear Lennon’s unconventional rhythm guitar in there bashing about. Great tune.
12) Wait
Love the percussion. I like the contrast between the Lennon vocals and the McCartney vocals. Love the ending!
11) If I Needed Someone
Killer Guitar intro and George vocals! Great tune. I can see and hear why the Beatles liked the Byrds as an American band.
10) The Word
Nice. So Beatle-ey with the Lennon/ McCartney vocals. They sound like they are experimenting with some different vocal techniques and the musical interlude is driving. Piano with the guitars is nice. Love the, “ It’ So fine, it’s Sunshine “ part!
9) Girl
My dad always liked this one. Very interesting melody line plus the lyrics are thought provoking. Love the BGV’s and the the guitar arpeggios!
8) I’M Looking Through You
Awesome McCartney composition. Great vocals and nice organ and guitar work. McCartney takes it to the house on this one.
7) You Won’t See Me
Classic man, I love this one. This one is on the hard drive! I love the oooh la la la’s. BGV’s rock on this one! Paul’s lead vocal is strong.
6)Think For Yourself
One of my favorites. Classic George and the fuzz guitars are sweet. I always liked this one but I’m not sure if others cared for the song as much as I did.
5) Michelle
This song is just part of my life. The melody has left an indelible mark on my brain. Too bad, I don’t know French.
I always thought it was cool to sing in another language.
4) Nowhere Man
This song is iconic and drips Beatles. It is so identifiable as the Beatles. One of their signature songs in my opinion. You could put this one in a time capsule. It screams, The Beatles!”
3) Norwegian Wood
A Lennon masterpiece. This never gets old to me. The song draws me in every time I hear it. There’s some haunting element about Lennon’s storytelling that I can’t put my finger on. It is gripping. It is chilling yet inviting; like it might be dangerous to listen to but it sounds so good that you MUST proceed with caution (if that makes any sense).
2) Drive My Car
Love the guitar intro! Driving song (see what I did there, lol) with killer vocals, guitars, drums. This songs Rocks!!
Almost the best song on the album for me. The beep beep...beep beep yeah’s are way too cool.
And the number one song is:
1) In My Life
What can I say? To me this song is undeniably profound and causes one to reflect in a contemplative fashion about one’s own life. There’s just something about this song. It’s “got that something... I think you’ll Understand.” (To quote an earlier song of theirs) The George Martin bit is nice but the ending! Wow! Lennon so heartfelt and then the guitar is the perfect punctuation. The best diamond in a collection of other diamonds.
So there it is, I hope you enjoyed my ranking. Rubber Soul is a great piece of work. Put in on the turntable and give it a spin! Peace and Love as Ringo says!

If I had a time machine I'd go back & get the Beatles to do this--then let's see what happens.
Have to admit that I walked it many moons ago, if only just Because. But still gotta wonder if this particular crossing has a higher incidence of vehicular incidents than the average London crosswalk. I'm sure there are statistics available online somewhere.
Rubber Soul: Every tune on that album was a "hit", and could easily have been released as a single only. A classic example of why the Fab were the unstoppable force that they were. And a peek into a time when fans eagerly awaited their next album. Everybody knew it was coming soon....and everyone knew it was gonna be off the charts. The songs and albums seemed to come in rapid succession with barely enough time in between to absorb the last one before the next one came down the pike.
Hate to say it, but even though the music is still great today......being privileged to hear it ''hot off the press'' back then really enhanced the experience. At least for me.
Yeah, Tempy, nothing beats having lived through the first curiosities, then pleasant surprises, then anticipations, then elations, then frenzied celebrations, then bubbling expectations, then (breakup) sadness, confusions, then solo celebrations, then long plateaued enjoyments. Truly a lifetime rollercoaster of emotions, but very pleasantly so. And it's doubly pleasing to see them so revered even in our, and their, golden years! Quite a validation, no?
