Get the Traynor YBA-200-2 (or first gen), the effects loop is designed to completely bypass the preamp like on modern ss amps. You basically get a modern light all tube power amp, made in Canada, with a warranty.

If this is for the studio, get a Reeves 225.

Even at low volumes, you don't lose the tonal richness.

The best amp out there to bring out the natural voice of your basses.

Mesa also makes the Simul-class 2:90. It's marketed as a guitar power amp. I have no idea if it would work well for bass (but theoretically it should).

I use a '75 Fender PA100. Four channels, not too heavy and sounds marvelous.

For a small, low power, high quality, all tube bass head, you might also consider the Emery Sound Bass Baby.

If budget is super tight, also look at the Ceriatone hand wired bassman build.

His workmanship beats the living snot out of any current Fender build.

Mesa makes the 2:90 (2x90w can be used summed for 180w) and the 2:100 (basically the same as the 2:90 with a bit more power per channel). These both work great for bass (I have used both and own a 2:90). With a nice preamp the 2:90 is a sweet (if a bit heavy) tube power section.

This. I actually have a Rivera HAMMER Stereo 320 I'm looking to sell. Has a more hifi sound when loaded with 6550s. I think it can be loaded with 6L6s. Mine has EL34s in it which can still sound pretty transparent when the presence and focus are set to 0.

I have seen guys use the power amp from a Hammond organ.
Heck, even Hendrix used one!
I've seen them for $300-500 on CL. You would have to build a case for it though.

Hmmm. My drummer dropped off an old 1958 Baldwin organ at my house that turns on but makes a bunch of racket. I was wondering if I should just scab the power amp out of it and build a headcase. It's probably only a 50w unit, but still loaded with it's factory GE 1958 tubes.

The power amp probably needs new caps and filters, but it should make a cool amp.

Tube preamps are mighty useful too.
