Q: I am a 30 Year old male. I have been dating a wonderful woman for 2.5 years. I would describe everything about her as perfect except for one thing. She absolutely refuses to [make me a grilled cheese sandwich.] Now I want to ask her to marry me, but the thought of going the rest of my life without receiving [grilled cheese sandwiches] is definitely a worry. I fear I may resent her eventually, or possibly feel the need to seek [grilled cheese sandwiches] out somewhere else when enough time has passed. It has already been 2.5+ years since I last experienced a [grilled cheese sandwich]. It is starting consume my thoughts. I don't know if this one thing is enough to be a deal-breaker. Everything else is perfect. I don't know what to do!

A: NGC, have you talked to this woman about why she’s so opposed to grilled cheese? Do her reasons seem valid and specific (past trauma, health issues, etc.)? Is there any room for negotiation? Has she always been opposed to grilled cheese or is it just specific to you?

You must tell her that the lack of grilled cheese is standing in the way of your commitment. I know it’s difficult to say – it sounds so petty and selfish -- but I’m here to tell you it’s a valid concern. You’ve probably heard this before, but disagreements about sex and money are usually what end relationships. If you’re resenting her now, fast forward 10 years. It will get worse.

Grilled cheese sandwiches are awesome. Especially with tomatoes and fancy cheese, like Brie. But some people would rather eat them than make them. And some people are allergic to them and can’t go near them.

But you’re not allergic. You like them a lot. If your girlfriend can’t come up with a grilled-cheese compromise, yes, to quote the wise Liz Lemon, this may be a deal breaker, ladies. Is the rest of her perfect enough to balance the sexual incompatibility?

Readers? Am I wrong? Can one live without grilled cheese if it’s their favorite food? Should a 30-year-old have to make that sacrifice? Share your thoughts here. And remember -- be respectful, G-rated, and thoughtful. Not like I need to ask. You guys are pros.

And the comments are awesome, #20 is possibly my favorite

Prediction: By the end of the day, the Bad Boys of Love Letters will be citing Wayne Bobbit’s Daily Affirmations: “I’m wood enough, I’m tart enough and doggonnit, people bite me.” Listen, Beej, let’s not put the mine before the shaft (John Shaft, can you dig it?). First, let’s make sure the fromage isn’t Camembert de Normandy, but more of a Pineapple Wiz. May I suggest the ingestion of pineapple in the days prior to your Penile Panini? It’s like a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. I’m not sure if your lady has an issue with the bread, the condiments or both. If it’s just the filling, she can complete the sandwich by hand. However, if the wrap’s the issue, I don’t care how kosher your dog is…she doesn’t relish the wiener. And all this is a moot point anyhow. The stinky cheese is supposed to get you to marry her. After that, your wife’s lactose intolerance will likely be pervasive in your life.

I don't understand. Why can't he make the grilled cheese sandwich himself?

HAHAHAHAHAAH that is so epic!

I certainly agree that a skillfully and carefully made grilled cheese sandwich is just awesome, and I'm blessed to be married to a talented cook. Of course, I wouldn't want to live on a diet of only grilled cheese sandwiches, but they are a wonderful and tasty treat that can be enjoyed any hour of the day.

Fixed it.

I think any wife can appreciate a good grilled cheese sandwich if she's properly prepared for the task at hand. First off, she should clear the table of any other kinds of meals she might have had before hand. Nothing worse than pulling out chunks of food from meals past in the midst of enjoying your grilled cheese sandwich. It's a straight mood killer, and completely unnecessary. A good wife should always be ready for a surprise grilled cheese sandwich. The best method, however, is having a good time with the preparation for the sandwich. A full bottle of wine, not only works well as a good social lubricant, but it also works as a good cleansing agent, that not only gets your wife drunk and relaxed for the task at hand, but it it also cleans her pallete. As part of the anticipation of a good grilled cheese sandwich, your wife should try to hold onto the bottle of wine as long as she possibly can before she lets it all go. This kind of tension, creates a sense of build up, that is more enjoyable when the sandwich is finally made. If done properly, not only will your wife enjoy making your grilled cheese sandwiches, but she will eventually beg you for it, and you can use it at leverage for whatever else you might need in your relationships. Say... two grilled cheese sandwiches. Or perhaps your wife's sandwich with another sandwich made from asian cheese. ;)

Just thought I'd add...that with my wife...I don't even have to ask for grilled cheese sandwiches. I might also add that it is nice to know that Maki isn't as much of a bogart with the grilled cheese sandwiches as I had previously assumed. Unfortunately my wife only shares her grilled cheese sandwiches with me. =/ That's cool because 9 times out of 10 we share mutual desserts.

My wife and I are spectacular chefs. She makes a great pulled pork sammich. All I'm saying. The kitchen is never tidy when we're done cooking. What's great is our ability to continue cooking whilst cleaning up afterwards. An endless supply of utensils, luckily.
