Almost NBD- Warmoth roasted 5-string

Posting this here and not the Luthier’s section because I’m assembling this from Warmoth parts and not building from scratch (hope it’s ok).

Neck is roasted flame maple and the body is roasted alder. The bridge is 2Tek

I’ve decided to experiment with this one and leave the body and neck unfinished, just Minwax paste wax. Warmoth states that I could just leave the neck as it is but I applied a thin wax coating as well. Not too worried if it gets dinged up or dirty. I’m aware of the risks of not having a protective finish, but we’ll see what happens!

Here are the rest of the parts for this bass (not sure whether will use the pickguard at this point). Tuners are BML lights. For strings, i am using the 4-string set with an extra high C, instead of a low B 5-string set:

Cats love Sunbeams. ;)

Seriously though, let us know how the roasted maple neck works out. I've considered trying one out for my parts bass that is currently sans neck. Seems like a great way to maybe save a few bucks on a quality neck by skipping the finish.

Zombie thread resurrection..

So how has it been 2 years down the road?

Asking because I am planning a Warmoth Jazz V build at this time, and instead of doing a finish job, I figure I could save almost $200 on going with a roasted ash body and leave it unfinished or just a thin coat of wax/oil.

I already have one of their roasted maple necks on my fretless and I left it totally unfinished...and it’s been awesome.

It’s held up well with just the oil finish (just playing at home, of course. I’m not a working musician so I cannot speak to that). It’s pretty stable. Added pic on top to show the wear from playing.

That’s awesome, still looks great!
I’m not a professional musician either, and most likely it would never leave my home.
I want to put together this bass as my 2nd USA bass (aside from my G&L). I had a ‘94 Stingray that I regrettably sold in 2012 to “pay some bills”. I ripped myself off because I could have gotten more than I did if I waited long enough....but those bills wouldn’t wait...

Once I can move forward and get out of financial limbo in this god-forsaken life, is when I can get this together (long and unfortunate story). Hopefully by next year...
