I've really been digging the D'Addario ProSteels out of all the SS strings I've tried so far (Rotosound, LowRiders, Dunlop). However, I've just gone through a big tone change and I'm wondering if there are other strings that might be worth trying out. If there are strings that have a singing high end, but lots of depth to the low end (not tinny or thin), and they cut well with a little growl then please tell me what they are. Basically just a good full sound with that clarity and high end content that comes with SS. I actually took out the boost in my low mids because it seemed to muddy up the sound for me, so I'm taking more of a Justin Chancellor type approach but adding back some @$$ around 80hz or so. I'm thinking about giving Hi-Beams a whirl since they always get a good rep, and the round core might be easier on my fingers for playing extended periods of time.
Hi Beams are an excellent choice however I also recommend trying Dean Markley SS Helix strings. I find I get a bit more aggressive tones from the Helix strings but both have served me well.
Dunlop SuperBright Nickels. Sound like HiBeams but with less mid scoop and are about the same tension. All that with the smoother feel of nickel.
I'm playing a set of GHS Super Steels and am very happy with them. Nice growl, great clarity and body to the sound. Inexpensive as well.
I've always considered trying them but I was afraid they would be too mid heavy and not bright enough.
How do you think they compare to ProSteels (especially high mid-high end content)? The Dunlop SS I tried were just kind of bad. Much tighter and less rich than prosteels
Well SuperBrights are nothing like regular Dunlops. The brand name is about all they have in common! Compared to ProSteels, SuperBright nickels will have a less 'harsh' mid and more of a mild crunch in the mids...kind of like a purr instead of a clank. ProSteels are very rough feeling in comparison, but not nearly as rough as Cobalts It's quite incredible what Dunlop was able to do with these strings.
