Alternatives to the Bar Gig

I used to play bars & clubs all the time when I was in my classic rock covers band years ago. Before that, it was Holiday Inns, VFW posts, Elks Clubs, etc., playing standards in a lounge band. It was all great fun, I made some bucks along the way...and I gained some very valuable practical experience - including the development of my musicianship skills.

Now that I'm getting back into music again after a (too) long hiatus, with an originals project that I've been just itching to develop, the bar scene just ain't gonna cut it - most particularly not here in NYC.

Soon as we're ready to gig, I reckon the first step will be to see if we can play a set on some multi-band showcases that happen around here, targeting bands that play in a similar style. The purpose: To iron out the live performance "bugs", while getting the name out and beginning to develop a following.

After that, it's time to start producing our own shows. Fortunately there are a number of halls & theatres throughout the city that can rented out for the purpose. And since New York is an "industry town", there are also booking agents, show promoters & ticketing agencies with whom we will be able to collaborate.

Other than that, I'd be keen to play virtually any non-traditional venue/event that makes strategic sense for an original band. Gotta think outside the box, and all that.

Still working to develop & refine the business model. First things first; step by step...

Go to Ottos Shrunken Head on any Sunday night and talk to Frank Wood. He can get you some shows on the bills he books. No real pay, but good for original bands launching or relaunching. Tell him Tom Richards says hello.

All the above, and wine/beer festivals, contra dances, and gallery parties. Locally, there are also ladies armwrestling events and roller derby gigs. (Haven't played either of those yet, but they look like a good time.)

My band has a gig this weekend at a new cafe.These gigs are pretty cool, low key and fun. Also do you have any true music rooms in your area. These places cater to true music fans mostly folk,light rock, jazz,blues and some serve light food ,beer wine but are not bar like. We play one that I call NE Ohio's Austin city limits. Great place low key.

I love the low key places like this easy....fun.

Where I live we stay real busy in the summer doing alot of outdoor gigs and weddings. Street dances, rodeos,festivals etc. Most of these gigs have private sponsors so how much the band is paid is not totally dependent on alcohol sales.
