Am I anal?

Grrr, I need to vent a bit.

I was talking to a friend of mine online just a moment ago, and I mentioned he needed to borrow me some CDs at some point (he has a lot of heavier metal that I want to try listening to). He mentions he'll upload it, and I basically say I want to borrow the original CD since mp3 is crap and I'd prefer to encode it myself.

He claims there's no difference between mp3 and lossless because mp3 only removes frequencies the human ear can't hear. I'm bored at work and end up ranting to him about the differences in audio and audio compression and the problems I have with mp3. I wasn't trying to be anal, I was just bored at work and talking. I admit I probably AM anal about a/v, but I like to think I have high standards that I like to uphold. I'm not anal in general. I just have high standards about the things I indulge in and am happy to talk about it. Especially considered this guy is a friend, I wouldn't have thought he'd have a problem accepting that I just wanted to talk about it... but he seems to think I went out of my way to make him look stupid and correct what he said that was wrong.
He then goes to compare me to someone he used to know who was "anal" and happens to mention he didn't have a girlfriend for the three years he knew him. Umm, I admit to being a social dufus, but even if I am "anal", surely making judgements about someone like that is just as bad.

I wouldn't say I'm anal. I would say I'm a proud and loyal person in general, and this relates to the things I am passionate about as well.

I admit I just ranted at him, but as a friend I'm a bit annoyed he felt that I needed to be subtle with him (if I'm friends with someone, I give it to them straight; if it's someone I don't really know that well and I happen to talk about things I'm passionate about, I'll be more subtle...). I haven't actually known this guy for that long, so I guess he doesn't understand how I operate; but if he's not going to accept me for how I am, I don't have time to care.

I've also had to ring this guy up a couple of times to talk him out of thinking stupid things. I just don't know what to do with him.

Sorry about the rant on nothing in particular, but I needed to vent a bit. If you don't understand what I mean, think of the last time someone came up to you and asked you why your guitar only had 4 strings :D

I forgot to mention I have a growing pile of CDs at home.

I'm not going to go out on limb and buy something I may well hate (I already have a DragonForce album for that). I'll borrow a CD, listen to it, and if I like it, I'll start collecting from that band. I'd also prefer to buy stuff people close to me don't have. Like, me and my best friend basically exchange CDs freely. Piracy? Probably. But I don't get into many bands by being told, "Hey, check out this band... Go buy their albums". Sorry, I'd rather finish off my Rush or R.E.M. collection than take a risk :P

I did that over a year ago with Rush's Retrospective, and now I have about 3/4s of their discography :D

Edit: I'm also not discussing it here. There's already plenty of topics about for that.

It's hard to judge a band when the mix has been trashed because of mp3 encoding.

That and I only have 400 megs free on my iRiver :crying:

Meh you guys.

Invalid Link Removed <- how much crap I've spent money on in the last few years. CDs are on the second shelf to the right. And after Christmas I plan to get MANY, MANY, MOAR! I think I deserve a big £100 order for all of the hard work I haven't been doing at work while posting at Talkbass lately :D

Edit: Oh,

"Can I suggest a cholonic irrigation? It might help loosen you up.....so to speak."

Made me smile :D

By the way, if you guys pay off my student debts, I'll use the money to buy more CDs.........

Utter nonsense.

how much crap I've spent money on in the last few years. CDs are on the second shelf to the right.

You've bought 30 CDs over the last few years and that gives you the right to steal music?

By the way, if you guys pay off my student debts, I'll use the money to buy more CDs.........

Why don't you just steal the money off us?

Do you have a reputation for borrowing and not returning until you are bugged several times? If not, I'd just ask the guy again if you can borrow the CDs you want to listen to. He hasn't said "no" yet. Maybe ask to borrow 2 and not 10, just to demonstrate that you can be trusted.

Or you could always say, "I've thought about it and I don't think I could deal with the guilt... copying music is theft... could I just borrow the cds to see if I like them before I buy them for myself?"

yes, you're anal

not because of the mp3/cd argument but the fact you spent a good chunk of time re-hashing the argument on here for our benefit

shoulda been a poll with the following choices:

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Anal Carrots
