Am I just being a snob about this?

What is written on the headstock has very little to do with the quality of the bass. If you read through the threads here you will find hundreds if not thousands of people who are extremely happy with low cost basses whether they be Squier, SX, Johnson, or even no name Chinese knock offs. You'll also find people that have paid $1000+ for a Fender, Gibson, or other high dollar brand and are extremely disappointed with the quality. Don't worry about what the headstock says. Just find a bass that feels and sounds good to you.

I played a Squier in a music shop the other day. Apart from a few sharp fret ends and it needing a good setup* there was absolutely nothing wrong with it. I wouldn't hesitate to use it for gigging with.

*The neck relief was a bit on the high side so needed a tweak to the truss rod, probably saddle adjustment, and always worth checking the intonation.

It has already been said that they are way better than the budget instruments that were available when I was 17 (I'm 63 now).

Ok, I do remember how you are feeling now (albeit about a decade ago), but you can't let that inhibit you from progressing in the instrument. There will always be somebody like that which you despise. Right now it's the kids who can't play who have a Fender/Gibson, then it will be the yahoos who can barely play that had their grandparents buy them a US Fender and Ampeg SVT + 810 because they thought about taking up bass, after that it will be the no-talent hacks riding other people's coattails and getting endorsement deals just based on their names.

There will forever be the, in our opinion, undeserving ones. You can't let that get you down though, the sooner you kill that off, the happier you will be on your bass journey. My roommate (guitard) spends thousands on gear, while his only aspiration is playing along with indie rock MP3s in his room....WHAAA??? YMMV though, just focus on your progress and forget the rest.

Thanks for all these responses, from actual musicians. You're right. I'm a long time guitarist and I have decent guitars and I don't mean to brag but i can play the rich Gibson kids under the table. Don't get me started on the endorsement deals..........

You must have REALLY wanted that Bass in a bad way to pay "full price" for the floor model, I understand that your only 17 but I Personally would NEVER buy a floor model, ESPECIALLY if they didn't cut me some kind of a deal. I'd take it back and get a new one in a box AND have them set it up correctly. You deserve that, you paid for that.

More than once been asked what it was after hearing "that's a great sounding bass"

I love my Squier Jazz Standard. It's really that simple.

It's no Fender Am Standard, but it sounds great, plays great...nothing not to like, except for the odd issue with my pickups going out. Need to look into that...

So i don't sound like an idiot. I said to the clerk "Ya this is the one i want" He met me by the cash and gave me a ratty box with the display model. It didn't really strike me until i left. When i went to return it, they said that they should have never let that guitar leave the store and that they can order me a new one or i can get my money back. i took the money.

Get a new Squier and enjoy the heck out of it. The new Squier basses are really nice for twice the price they are. Heck, if you had $800, I'd tell you to buy 2 Squiers - fretted jazz, fretless Jazz - and use the leftover cash on a nice effects pedal.

I own 2 american fender jazz basses and I just bought a vintage modified squier less than a week ago. Super excited to play it for the first time at practice tonight. And even more excited to play it at the Hard Rock Cafe here in Las Vegas on Saturday night. Btw I'm 33 years young. Ya see my point. Squiers today are far better than when I was 17.

When I was 17 I saw Sting and Geddy Lee playing a Steinberger L2, I has to have one, especially after trying one ( a real L2) so I worked my ass off and started to save, Im 40...........almost have enough.

So I bought a 70s squier bass, and I enjoyed it but the music store sold me the display model and the action was too high, it was covered in scratches etc. So I took it back and I have the option of getting a new one or my money back. I want to get a fender 70s jazz , but they're like 800 bucks. Should I just stick with the squier? Or what should I do. I am not a huge bassist that's why I'm in this dilemma.

Esthetics and looks…

The sheer joy of tinkering and building something unique…

...you name it. The point being is this; if you love your bass, the logo is worth less than the ink it was printed with.
