Am I overplaying?

Loved it, the boss man has a good thing going here and I'd go along with his suggestions - whatever they might be.
He is pretty creative, he has made a name for himself in this genre making a lot of money at one time. Unfortunately the times have changed and this genre isn't as popular as it once was. It has been replaced by bachata which is another style from the Dominican Republic also venues are hiring DJs instead of paying for a whole band.

I agree. Way too many glissandos.

It's your uncle's band. If he thinks you're overplaying, you are overplaying. Talkbass opinions don't matter.
I can hear at least two times when the glissandos really sounded out of place. But what about the passing notes I play between the chord changes and the hammer ons where they too much or was it mainly the glissandos?

I play bass for my uncle's merengue band. He usually wants me to keep the bass line simple and use and effect we call ponche (ghost notes which sound like a kick drum) as much as possible. Not to long ago we recorded this video. My uncle was complaining that i was doing too much. I listened closely and although I could have kept it simpler I don't think I was overplaying really bad. What do you guys think was I doing too much?

Get a Sadowsky - this will fix the problem.

I have considered a sadowsky but I am just so used to playing 6 string basses. I wish roger would make 6 string basses

It doesn't really matter - even a 5 string Sadowsky will fix the problem of over playing.

You are over playing because of the feel of the 6 string neck.

Get a Sadowsky and then show your uncle the response on TB - this will put it all right.

Cheers

Some one mentioned the fact that I held certain notes too long. That was done deliberately. The bassist who recorded the tract did this on two occasions and i actually liked it. So I did it the same way around the end of the first verse

If you look at the video I was only using a markbass 210p cab so I could
Hardly hear myself. This made it hard for me to play as well as I normally do. Once he gave me the video file I raised the heck out of the low frequencies when I was editing it so people could hear the bass more.

Sure. Not being disrespectful, though what is the purpose of this extra information?

No offense taken its just that the tone wasn't as I good as it could be because I had to play a little harder to be audible. I don't know about you but I just can't groove as well if I can't hear and feel a nice oomph when I play bass.

Well, turn it up or wear head phones. Whatever you do, just play simpler bass lines.

If your accepted BL (family or otherwise) says play simpler bass lines, then you either:
- play simpler bass lines
- change bands
- start your own band.

Whatever you chose, don't take the crowd funding approach of complaining to TB - our opinions are utterly meaningless.

Your uncle would rightly not care in the slightest what an online avatar called Lowness (or any other avatar) thinks.

Sounds pretty good, actually! But since you asked for a critique, maybe he's concerned about all the sliding you're doing? The sliding may be a bit much.
