You've only got 8 years on me and I only picked up the bass two years ago. Best thing I ever did. I enjoy it so much more than guitar and am already decent enough to play with some very good musicians.
If you don't go for it then you'll regret it. 54 is old to a 20 year old just cause they ain't been around. Piece o' cake..have at it!

Too old? Nope. Too old to chase a groupy? Probably, if you want to save a shred of dignity. But this is bass we are discussing, so groupy problems aren't going to be an issue. 
One of the best things you can do for your mental health. Just need to find the right musicians. When I picked it back up mid 40s it took a few years to find like minded band mates but I'm in two bands now and loving it
I was 50 when I got back into it. That was 13 years ago. Do the math. I was doing gigs within a couple of months after i got back into it and I have been hittin' between 30 and 45 gigs a year for the past seven years now. Still get flashed once in a while too.
Absolutely go for it. I'm 66 and a little over a year ago I took up the bass ukulele to fill in the ukulele group to which I've belonged for about 3 years. I have nerve damage in my neck and shoulders, which is one reason I went for the really small size bass ukes and also mini bass guitars.
Go For It ! I've got 20 years on you, walk with a cane , but I would do it ..... If I was asked !

I quit for a long while when I was traveling extensively for business, started again around 60. I'm now 70 and still playing the hard rock I was playing in the 60's. physical age is irrelevant. No, my fingers are not as fast as they used to me, but I concentrate on quality rather than quantity.
Definitely not too old.
My dad was a middling hobbyist guitar player for his whole life. Then in his mid 50's or so his church needed a bass player so he started taking lessons (guitar and bass) and now he plays for church or related groups at least twice a month. It's been really cool to see his growth as a player long after most folks have given up trying to learn a new instrument.
