I'm 54 as well. Started playing at 15. Took a lot of time off and now better than ever. I'm actually starting to see some progress. Got "Get on the Floor" by Michael Jackson DOWN. ha!
Still looking to get my first Fender P and J. Just never did it and I somehow feel that I'm lacking. MIM is fine for me. Not looking for an investment.

I turned 56 in October. I had finally relegated myself to playing twice a month in rotation in my church on Sunday mornings. In the last month I have been invited to join a new group in the area, my old group has gotten back together (after the death of the guitarist) for a reunion, and I practice with them tomorrow. I was also asked to record and produce some tracks for a progressive folk duo. They also want me to play the ukulele bass, hand drums & percussion. These things come and go in waves, and at my age that's a good thing. As long as you enjoy playing, and are physically able, then I'd say have at it.
