am I too old to play again?

No not at all!!! I walked away from the music seen when I was 28 because of the excess and I did not know how to say no to anything. I have been back for about four years now.(I'm 51) I find that I'm having more fun now and even have gone back to taking music theory and lessons to make myself an all around better bassist. So go for it and enjoy your self. One word of advise you don't have deal with the jerks who think there sh-t don't stink. Just keep playing and you'll find the right guys to play with.

NO You are never too old!! I just saw the Blind Boys of Alabama, and nobody was telling them they're too old.

I'm 57, in a band that plays interesting less-often-heard rock and funky stuff from 60s and 70s, and we've discovered that we're popular with kids in their 20s - they like the great rock music, and we play it well (hey we grew up with it). They don't care that we're old!

Dave, take a step back and look at the question you're asking. Music is eternal, knows no bounds, does not discriminate based on age. You can do whatever you set your mind to do. If you have a passion to pursue playing live again then there is nothing stopping you. For the record... I'm 55 and play in a band. Hopefully that's helpful to you. :)

You're never too old to play music in general. I do think we can get too old to play certain styles or maybe portray a certain image. For example I think your reaching if you're think you're going to end up playing on the Disney channel at 54. I know for me I'm 34 now. I think for metal, all variations of rock from acoustic rock to hard rock, and country you can play forever. I mean Dug Pinnick is what 70 now? Country has gone more and more pop over the years to the point now where it's more like everyone playing an instrument is part of the backup band for the singer who is the focus. I couldn't tell you if the people playing instruments on Taylor swift albums or tours are 15 or 80 and I doubt a lot of people know. Many of the bands I grew up listening to for example bands like tool, Alice in chains, foo fighters, and Metallica are all in their 40s and 50s now and they are still playing.

I'm 57. Have stopped and started at least a dozen times since my early 20's when I gigged regularly. Sometimes i could barely play but after a few weeks of practice, most (not all) comes back. I'm at it again. All that matters to me is the joy of the groove.

She put her guitar down (the 1956 J-50 that is now mine), took off her harmonica holder, went to the mic and said, "It's too damn hot!". With that she ran toward the back of the stage and jumped into the bayou.
